One of those projects that's gonna cost somebody a lot of money- if the car were totally free I cannot see how you get it restored to a reasonably high standard for less than $40K... and it could wind up being much, much more even if you were doing most of the work yourself.

And matching duct tape to protect the leather on the driver's seat!

What a shame if the mileage is as low as the ad says. How do you screw up the GM automatic transmission in 24,xxx miles?

Years and years of neglect and hard use there. Good project for Brettski if the body is sound!

If cars could talk to people, that leather and blown transmission would not be telling me 24,000 miles.

    that's absolutely right...
parts, paint, interior alone...and 2-4 years of your weekend and vacation time...you could probably do-it-yourself for $30-40K...if you had the space and the tools.

    hmmm...
depending on what was needed (suspension, brakes, exhaust, heads, motor ?) beyond the paint and interior, you could be looking at $60-80K worth of work.

    how ?

400+ hrs in mechanical, 100-150 hrs for the engine (if it needed it, it may not), all of your required parts, $10K for decent body work /paint and $10K for an interior.

    and that's for a sorted, refreshed driver...add 20-30K for a 'restored' car...

but i know that you know that John.

OR, the smart guy buys something like either of the extemely well sorted examples below for $35K...and then just drives it and stays on top of the routine maintenance as the years pass.
they've both had the same $40-60K worth of 'love' invested into them...you just don't have to pay for it, that's the only difference.

i'm going to get both of these examples and more posted in the Ads as soon as i can figure out how to...

So you're losing tens of thousands on each car? You make it up in volume?

But you are right, this is not a car to buy long distance, you would need to check out the engine, suspension, body etc. to make an informed decision as to whether your rebuild costs are $30K or $80K.

Not for the faint of heart, that's for sure!

LOL...but the part i can't figure out is how i keep getting further behind !

it's like Homer said when he was stuck in the hole..." dig up, stupid ! "

the 400 is my personal car of the past 11 years, which i'm only thinking of parting with so that i can fund my 365 project...
but the 365 is for sale also...but only one will go and i'll happily keep the other.
so yes, i'm tens of thousands upside down on thatone over those 11 years...happily though, lots of smiles along the way.

i'm sure you're familiar with the 400i...and yes, **ck yes...that one got the equivalent of the bigger number, all in, if i run the numbers at my very modest labour rate of $65/hr...including the car.
thankfully, i don't pay $65/hr for labour on the 'inhouse' cars...and because i buy $100 000 worth of Ferrari parts a year, i get a tiny discount there too...but not much.

I think you'll find they're only quoting what's on the speedo and in that they are not lying.
I'm sure that everyone here, and indeed anyone with half a brain, can work out the speedo has had a birthday or even two.

Hmmm interesting if it was not located on the other side of the pond. As a DIY person myself I'd buy it and use it as a daily driver. If the engine and shocks ar okay I would risk the 9/10K and make it a daily driver, as I already own a restored 400. The seller can keep the 400TH and I'd go for a Tremac T5 conversion, fix the seats and service the engine.

And if it turned out to be a POS, it is worth the cash in parts. Front lenses and bumpers look okay, so... ;)

    Good day John,

You are most welcome! Personally, I feel that having a little bit of history and/or pics of these cars is really helpful to those who purchases these cars (perhaps they find some past details on their car), those who enjoy following the market on these cars, and also those who are in the market.

    Cheers,

    Sam

...like the color, and the very spiffy seat inserts too. Bet she was a beauty when under her own power motoring down the road way.

Of course my other car is gold, so there's no accounting for people's tastes !

But at what price Jim ?

I, for one, am blown away (and highly suspicious) about where this one is going, price wise. A parts quality, Teal green, auto, in peices with a brutal interior for $14K ?
    Come on.
ya, why would anyone pay $30K for a decent one in a nice colour when they could have this beauty for $15K plus shipping ?
For the highly desirable colour combo or the 'low' milage ?
good luck to you, sir - but don't shill it up too high, you might just end up keeping it !

Well, I made the comment when the price was 9100. I guess it’s gone up quite a bit. It will be interesting to see what if goes for and what the future of the car holds. I hope it doesn’t get parted out. Being a CA car the body is most likely rust free. The "other thing" about this car is it has the Webers, which to me anyway is a big deal. Heck, I could see rebuilding the transmission and chopping the roof off and making a convertible out of it! I think one of these cars in convertible form would be a real treat!

Indeed, something appears off with this auction given that it "sold" for $20650.00 USD... Look at the bid history... Two bidders were sure "interested", ahem, and kept bidding. Time will tell, as I have seen this before where the seller re-lists and says the buyer did not have the funds, etc..

    Cheers,

indeed Brian...looks like you 'called it' as it was happening.

actually Jay, with the carbed motor, it certainly worth more than $5K...but really, $20K, when you can get a decent, in a nice colour, with a nice interior, for $35K ?

i too, think not...or maybe the 'market' is finally on the way up ? ; )
