Congratulations Steve! It's called talent. I know it must be gorgeous....and to have ten acres to go along with it. To me, that's what makes it really special, private, and home.
I have been to the top of the mountain and seen the burning bush.....Well, not to be sacrilegious, but what a beautiful stunning house, a work of art!! I can say you definitely made the right decision on all counts. Situs, plans, and finish. I could not have been better. Thank you for the wonderful tour. Post some pics of your home and view so others can see what I am talking about. The view was amazing....
Speaking of photos....I have to say John that you fall in that category as well. The most beautiful mountain retreats thread.
Thanks for the compliment - I know Steve is going to be there for Xmas so I can not wait for some pictures
Steve (and others) I have watched your search and final construction with interest. Your home looks beautiful as predicted. Katherine and I live in Raleigh Nd are beginning to look for a 2nd home that could even fit with retirement plans 5 years or so from now. I am curious about everyone's thoughts on gated communities vs just private average. Is the added security a real benefit? What are the downsides with a gated community? I think we would spend quite a bit of time up here but worry about the weeks/months when the home is left vacant. Also would like to leave a play car up there and want to make sure all is safe. Any guidance would be appreciated. Chip
I dont like them. The added security is of course a plus but the added neighborhood covenants can get to be a pain. Also, in the nicer areas, crime is not really a problem. I am not in a gated place, and the only crime we have had here in the past 50 years were both inside jobs. No way to protect against that....
Funny to read this, i've been going through the same search for the past year, and just today i wired the deposit for our 3 acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains. We close on Jan 12. We wanted to be near Asheville but it was hard deciding on which side of I-40 to be but in the end we found the perfect building site for our second home high ontop of the town of Whittier, NC with incredible views of the mountains and river. We'll start the building process in the spring and i look forward to meeting my new NC neighbors at an upcoming fchat gathering. Congrats to you Steve, your choice looks very peaceful, Merry Christmas.
I have been searching foreclosures in Burnsville for over a year now and have a line on a bunch of them. I am very surprised no one else is doing this in Yancey County. It is one of the beautiful places in NC, with 19/23 being widened and designated a scenic highway. I have a home for sale at Mountain Air www.mtnair.org that was a foreclosure with great views, and am closing on the one pictured below. 8.5 acres, 4800 heated, with 800 unheated and additional unfinished in the three car garage, all on the purest river in NC with it's very own bear cave! Although we have some work to do, I think you would be surprised at the upset bid price-think low. There was a 1.6mm note on the property, although that is about twice what they had in the house. ...If you like golf, fly, or have friends who fly, the Mountain Air house would be perfect. I think I'll keep the river house for a few years. You did great - any fish in that river? Have a great holiday - still waiting for pictures of Steve's house John E
Thanks John, we got lucky. The neighbors said it is right in front of the best trout fishing on the river. There is a 15 foot trout hole right off the big rock, with a 31 inch Brown Trout recently caught. Yes Steve, we are waiting to see that beautiful home..
So...the first foreclosure I purchased at Mountain Air is on the market now but I really have mixed emotions about selling it. Perhaps you will understand why when you see these pictures, starting with the golf course. It is one of the most beautiful fly in communities in the US. Price right at 399,000. This is the lowest priced house in this community. Homes range from one bedroom condos to over 16,000 square feet with "name brand" families with legacy homes in Mountain Air. J-M F, Interesting house, the one you're buying. It was featured in Fine Homebuilding seven, eight years ago and I kept the mag thinking if we ever got a nice piece of property in the woods that layout might work well. The one in the mag was in Wisconsin or Minn...anyway that one,on the Toe River?...sure looks good. Like the way they used the quality and features. Great find. I still have the mag,btw...it's around here somewhere...want it? Cheers, RE
Yes, it is on the Toe off Rice Rd in Burnsville. The magazine would be appreciated and nice pic of the 360. Where in NC?
J-M, Hah,found it...and your house is an impressive rendition and very well done to say the least. And on the Toe,wow... PM me your addy and I'll stick in the mail...you'll enjoy seeing the details of the featured house,it was Sept'96 and the house built in '94...sez $154 a ft..good luck on that now, building anyway. We're in Burke county,on the mighty Catawba..with a nice southfacing view of the South Mountains. I like rock and wood houses, near water, sitting up. So I especially like your new one. Well well done.
