This is nothing new, Been doing this for years in machine shops. Called a Wall Drill. Was patented in 1911 in Wall Pa. USA. Now most modern shops use RAM EDM.

It looks like it needs an oscilating chuck to work properly. The bit is probably cheap in comparison.

Have you ever heard of the Wankel engine? Similar principle.

A better explanation is found here -

    Hex hole?

And if you increase the number of sides, you could actually produce a ROUND hole. Wonders never cease.

You start with a pilot drill, then each hole ( square or hex etc. ) has a unique template the size of finished hole. That gets attached to end of work piece.

Very cool kinematics - now is there some way I can get one of these, reasonably?

I agree, the chuck action must be the most significant piece, but there are a lot of tools out there that are well sorted out and not too $$.

For panels, Greenlee punches were pretty much the standard for mounting rectangular connectors.

You are correct Russell, I have used them years ago. Developed by the Watts brothers from Wilmerding Pa. next town over from Wall Pa. My memory is not what is once was.
