If it came out from the rear drain plug can just about garantee that it is a crown wheel securing bolt. I can't remember if you can see these side on through the drain hole as you turn the diff if not see if you can borrow a boroscope and check all the bolt heads are there. If it is the bolts you can leave the engine in the car and remove the bellhousing and the rear transaxle cover. Once the rear cover is removed you can jack the rear of the engine up to enable removal of the complete diff assembly. It is difficult to get past that thin frame assembly, but possible. Do a search there are cases of these bolts shearing and also info on replacements and various changes through the TR years. Good luck.

    Hi Melvok,

Next week i am going to take the Testa to workshop of mine and i am going to drop the engine for full service.

It is good time to open the gear box and check it.

I am not worried too much about the gear box because run smooth and shift right but this bolt head annoying me.

We will open the chocolate box and see what inside .

    I will update with photos.

    Thanks

Is a broken crown bolt an early indicator of diff failure?

I could imagine diff vibration pushing the bolt to failure.... or vice versa.

It will be very interesting to learn of the condition of this diff. Hopefully you'll magnaflux the diff while it is in-hand.

    Rgds,
    Vincenzo
