I've always liked the older ones. The newer ones not so much. Had a buddy with an older one years ago, it was fun.

As far as more modern ones I've had great luck with Ford Rangers as little trucks. Driving one now that I picked up with only 24+K miles on it. Just turned 40K the other day. Great little snow truck too, didn't miss a beat in all that last mess of snow and ice!!

The early ones are the best but hard to find in good shape for decent price.
The late ones? Better dig deep for gas money, they suck it.

My wife had a late 80s full-sized Bronco in the 1990s. It was a horrible pile of garbage. Whereas the first-gen Broncos were designed to be like Jeeps -- utilitarian and low-speed, the full-sized Broncos were equipped for modern highway travel despite being cheaply made and very pooly designed.

The two largest problems are proportions and steering. Even more than the smaller BroncoII, the full-size vehicle is a tall box on a small wheelbase with a sloppy truck suspension. Throw in a completely numb steering system, and you have a vehicle that wanders all over the road and is easily put sideways or rolled. (My wife's parents had two Broncos, and both drove exactly the same way.)

As a for-fun around town classic, the old Broncs are pretty neat. As a primary driver -- you're better off with just about any sedan than a 80s Bronco. And for the record, we also had a hand-me-down 1998 Expedition, and that was nearly as bad engineering wise and worse in terms of reliability!!!

Was the convertible top an option, or did they all have removable hard tops?

All tops are removable by a lengthy process of removing bolts. I don't think a soft top was a Ford option though two after market companies started making them. They are great if you want the "top down" feel and are easy to roll up / remove. Though switching from hard to soft is a chore and I've never put a hard top back on once removed. Though others do it as a seasonal thing.

    Thanks...

Though I haven't spent much time with it. It's my third.

I don't know of any issues with the '91. Probably a lot more comfortable with creature comforts.

Head over to classicbroncos.com and they can lead you to good info on the 91's.

    Matt,
If it is a local truck I would be happy to look it over for you. I worked for Ford 16 years.
At least then you would have a better idea rather then just pictures.
    PM me if interested.
    Be safe.

I second this. I had a 1989 and agree with everything said above, including the "horrible pile of garbage". Towing a boat in one was a white knuckle experience due to the short wheelbase.

Take my mechanic's and my own advice - leave it half way across the world and find something else.

This brings back some memories. I grew up in the, very small, back seat of a 73 Bronco. Trips to the San Juans, dunes, snow drifts, ect.... My dad stopped driving it around 1990. My grandpa bought it new in 73 and my dad has had it since 74 when my grandpa died. I keep telling him he needs to start driving it again. He is 67 now, what is he saving it for? It's just sitting in the garage now like it has for the past 20 years with 68k miles on it and some minor wear. It's a bad ass rig.

The old Broncos get two thumbs up from me. Hopefully it will be passed onto me and not my bro.

Steve you should tell your father your passion for it now. Maybe you'll get an early birthday gift.

    Hey Matt:

Have you ever looked at a Laforza? I had one for about 5 years. Really nice rigs. Italian design, uses a Ford 5.0 litre V8 (same as the Mustangs). All leather interior, wood, etc. used ones are a heck of deal. Here is one for under $6,000.00. I swear, I had more people stop and talk to me about my Laforza than almost every other car I've owned. What I really liked about it, was you felt like you were driving something that nobody else had! You didn't see yourself coming and going 20 times on the way to work! hahahahaa....

I like the couch in back. :) A little bit taller tires would give it a better look.
