    Hey folks,

Born and bred Canuack here. I've always have a hankering to visit Australia and I'm coming up on a very good place in my career to actually take some time off and do it. I also recently found out about the working holiday visa, so I'm investigating the possibility of exploring that route.

I've purchased a couple oz (or OZ?) travel guides and am furiously reading and starting to save (I'm targeting late next year to mid-2012). But I have a few questions for you locals if you don't mind.

-I'm a really artsy/musical/museum type person. I'm currently targetting the east coast of australia (who doesn't?) but I also haven't made a final decision yet. Sydney and Melbourne both look like really artsy places. Which is better? On the opposite coast what is Perth like? (again I have been reading the travel guides but I'm looking for an insiders perspective.)

-I'll be going over there with little in the way of expectations job wise (I'm single and don't have to worry about much in the way of assets). But ideally I'd like to try and find work in my field (aircraft maintenance, avionics systems). Which city is the main aviation hub? Sydney? What local job search sites should I be looking at?

-Anything about Australia I should know that isn't typically printed in your normal travel guide? And hole in the wall haunts I absolutly MUST visit?

Oh and one more question: where can I meet the infamous Pap?

    Thanks again guys :)

I have a friend who is an aircraft technician. He lives in Sydney and works for Qantas. :D:D

He was offered a job in Brisbane with Qantas, but the roster was Mon-Fri. In Sydney, his roster is 4 on 4 off. :D:D

I dont know about Melb sorry. :):)

Im not really into the arty/farty stuff, so I cant help you there. But both Sydney and Melbourne are very nice Cities. :):)

I would love to live in either City if I could. :):)

But you can visit me ANYTIME out here, or we will catch up one day on one of my visits to Sydney. :D:D

If you like, I can ask my friend for you how to get onto a job with Qantas?? Just let me know dude. :):)

David, welcome to cyber Oz. IMO, Melbourne is the more "cultured" city, though there are some good galleries and Museums in Sydney. The national art gallery in Canberra is a must see. Sydney has a very good theatre culture and there are many great productions at the Opera House (funnily enough, not much opera) - you could find out more on the net, I guess. Plenty of good restaurants around - maybe Sydney has the edge there, but thats just a personal opinion.

Workwise, the aviation business in Oz is depressed at the moment, but will improve in the next year or so. Good avionics techs are always welcome. Whats your background? airline, GA, military? For airline & military you will need a security clearance, which might be a problem on a short term visa - be worthwhile finding out in advance.

I work with a number of avionics firms (installation design) and think that Brisbane is probably the most active area at the moment. Sydney is rapidly going the way of the DoDo, except for airline work - local avionics outfits have been laying off, not hiring.

Sounds like a great adventure- I'm sure that you'll enjoy it!

    really?

you're even crazier than i had thought.

for young people theres absolutely nothing in Perth except working for mining companies.

But i guess it is a great place if you like expensive housing, opressive heat in summer, horrible cold in winter, limited options of places to go unless you travel at least 4 hours on a plane, shops that are never open, police that will @$$ rape you if they catch you doing 1k over the limit ........

see below for a promotional video of Perth (courtesy of Bounce's thread)

i know its a pisstake, but it is based on truth.

on the flip side however, it is a pretty city, doesnt really have any traffic, no toll roads (not when i left 2 years ago anyway) and cheap parking

Well if I go through with this move (still in the research and feasibility stage) I'll definitely have to make a pilgrimage to meet the postwhore master! ;)

Thank you so much Dave! That information is gold to me right now! My background is in commercial GA fleets. The bulk of my experience is in lights turbines (king airs, C208s, twin otters) and now transport category pistons (DC-3's, 4's, and c-46s).

Regarding the paperwork front, I will be going down there with my Canadian rating in hand but due to the paperwork I figure it would be far easier to try and find positions where they are looking for an "experienced apprentice". It doesn't diminish my ability to work on my own, but solves many of the paperwork issues that would arise hiring a short term employee.

Question for you: Are aircraft techs expected to have their own tools down there as well?

thanks again Dave! I'll be sure to take a close look as Brisbane area :)

For finding work http://www.seek.com.au/ or http://mycareer.com.au/jobs/-/logistics-transport-supply/aviation/

Or look for a job agency that specialises in Aviation.

Sydney of course is the best. Just don't live on the north side of the bridge, that's not considered part of Sydney.

Melb is considered the artsy/musical hub of Oz but it's really cold and wet and they follow weird sports where Grand Finals that end in a draw get played the following week. Like no one has anything better to do....

Brisbane is like Canada no one really pays attention to them. (oops I just noticed where you are from, you live in the Mt Isa of Canada!! :D)

Other then that Dave 456 seems to be on the ball :)

Perhaps, my little amigo used to live here. Became a diesel fitter then he woke up to himself and left to Sydney to become an aircraft mechanic. :D:D

He did that, came BACK to Mount Isa to work in the Mines to save a house deposit (which he did over 18 months) and has since moved back to Sydney and working there again. :D:D

He is currently working on 747's, but they are training up to work on the A380's shortly. Probably working on them now actually. :D:D

Will tell ya his name shortly. ;):)
