thankgoodness it's not life threatening - all the best to Sterling for a quick recovery Carol autosport Stirling Moss is recovering in hospital from serious injuries he suffered in a lift accident at his home over the weekend. The racing legend fell down three floors of a lift shaft following a malfunction with the lift doors - when they opened on the third floor while the lift was still a floor further up. Moss broke both ankles and four bones in his feet, plus suffered further damage to his vertebrae, in the fall. Luckily he did not suffer any internal injuries. Following the accident, Moss was admitted to the London Hospital and then later moved to the Princess Grace Hospital, following the intervention of Professor Sid Watkins. Doctors hope he can be moved out of intensive care later on Monday, and his life is not in danger. Despite the severity of his injuries, his wife Lady Moss reports him to be in high spirits.
That's terrible but could easily have been fatal so he was relatively fortunate. Godspeed to him. Moderator: it is Stirling not Sterling, thank you. best regards, Marc
In Octane magazine a few months back there was one page feature of Stirling Moss' favorite things.....one was the carbon fiber lift in his home made, if I recall correctly, by McLaren. I have immeasurable respect for him and hope for speedy recovery.
Oh my, so sorry to hear it. He was to be in Amelia Island this week for the Concours. Wish he and Lady Moss the best...
Wow; hopefully he's ok. There's a video of his house on YouTube I think. I thought the lift was a gift from Williams....
Please, everyone, it's Stirling with an i. I second the request for a moderator to change it in the title. The man certainly deserves to have his name spelled correctly.
Correct - made by Williams Racing. interesting house.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9C2T0ObRzU Jedi
Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Sir STIRLING Moss. (.....Mods still asleep @ 11:00 am Pacific time........?...a little respec' please?.......)
Still trying to figure this out? The door opens on the lift, he must have gotten out of the seat thinking he was in the right spot, began to walk out and then plunged down three floors.(if the above is accurate) Tough to recover from stuff like this at his age. Get well soon!
I hope he will survive this. Such severe injuries at that age might cause fatal complications. I had the pleasure of meeting Moss at Goodwood. A very down to Earth kinda guy. He signed my retro jacket. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
That thought had crossed my mind to, fingers crossed he is ok. Yet again great photos great memories nice one.
Get well soon, Sir Stirling! Nice guy I've met several times. For a fellow of his acomplishments, he might have been a flaming A hole, but he has always been the complete polar opposite. God Bless.
I met him at the Watkins Glen 50th anniversary weekend a decade or so ago... he may be a small guy but he is one teflon tuff mutha -shut your mouth! However, having broken both ankles, four bones in his feet and chipped four of his vertebrae... that would be painfull for even a 20 year old... and he's 80! Gotta be some kind of super human.
Get well soon. I imagine that this has finally put a stop to any further driving. I hope he can deal with that ... . My sister had something signed by him at a classic race meeting dinner. My family are not much into autographs but heck Stirling Moss is not just anybody. I've also watched him race a VW Golf and a few classic single seaters. One of the very best. Pete
Hope he'll recover fully, I watched a 5th gear about the 599 HGTE yesterday and he's there in the passenger seat after he drove an old SWB 250...
I put this on his website: http://www.stirlingmoss.com/articles/news/press-release-following-stirlings-accident?page=2
Williams may have made the lift, but we all know McLaren are to blame. Damn Ron Dennis!!!!!!!!! But seriously, I hope Stirling gets better quickly - he is lucky to be alive!
