Once again I was asked to remove my felt hat at the security point ,as I went through the detector.
Once again a woman in full head gear walked straight through!
We must respect the relgionist beliefs of others, fick my safety.
I have been told that these detectors have a control that alters the sensitivity of these systems?
And that at the Canberra airport, they are far more sensitive then at other airports?

    Could be worse

I went through security at Dubai airport and they have a unique use of metal detectors.

1 go through and it buzzes ....
2 just go through again ......... and it buzzes
3 go through yet again ........ and it buzzes again
4 go straight to the aircraft

No security officers had a clue at what was going on , , everyone went through multiple times , always buzzed and they did nothing .......... an American guy watching this stupidity with me asked what on earth should we do .......... after a few seconds we both decided it was waaaaaay out of our control. All I will do is avoid any flights / airlines that stop in Dubai.

I don't travel through Canberra but Brisbane and Mt Isa are both much more sensitive than Perth. Mt Isa I can understand... but Brisbane

The above doesnt sound right at all for Dubai , they always wand you down after it buzzes or they will lead you off to the private screen rooms, dubai is very strict on this i travel through there every month, try flying through some smaller airports in europe like naples if you really want to be shocked

Hang on, they know that most hats will set up the detectors (because of a metal band that goes all the way around the hat), therefore by having you take it off, they are avoiding a false positive result.

With a woman in full gear, if she sets it off, there is something to look for as there shouldn't be any metal in her clothing.

Is this really a problem? Or am I missing something bigger?

By the sounds of it ,it might be safer to trail your 348 to the tablelands/Cairns:waterfalls,pubs,brilliant roads, reef, great climate, roomantic walks, lots of bed and breckys,
the reef is an hour away(OK 3/4 for you).
Sometimes the best things are around the corner.

Sometimes rules and regulations have perfectly legitimate, logical reasons that are not immediately obvious. Usually, however, they don't - particularly in the US.

As for Dubai, I believe that - lack of proper security aside - their airport might be one of the SAFEST places for Europeans, Australians, and North Americans, because the majority of people on those flights would be Muslims. Even the most fanatic Islamic terrorist is probably not going to blow up an airplane full of other Muslims just to get at a half-dozen Westerners.

This would not even come into the thought process of a Islamic terrorist. They would blow up an airport to get one Westerner.

Flip side of this is I get pulled over nearly every time for the 'swab' test - I was testy one day and called for the supervisor and it became clear that what happens is the testers only have to log a certain number of tests each day - no record of the people tested is kept - and the testers target people they think are not going to give them any aggro... obviously at least one has now reviewed their idea of 'small females' being less aggro! So-called security is a joke when the real issue is they don't know who's getting on a plane. If you buy and print a ticket online and have carryon only, you can walk onto a plane with no-one having any idea who you are.

The ones here in the US are the same way, thats how they work, its not someone who has a ton of metal on them, just how the detector works.

All they're scanning for in the Bangkok airport now is valuables to steal.
If your bag is slow coming through run a quick inventory check before walking off.
