Ok, I'm new on here and I'm reaching out to you guys as you all seem to be rather worldly and experienced. My wife and I are looking for some kind of sipping liquor. Something to come home from work and just sit back and sip on while relaxing. We were in Mexico for our honeymoon in August and had some pomegranite tequila that was outstanding. We were going to pick up a bottle on our way back through Playa Del Carmen, but completely walked right by the shop and got back on the bus and headed back to the resort. Now we're kicking ourselves in the ass because it's impossible to get in the states. Now we're looking for something else. I need to explain what we're looking for in order to narrow the enormous selection down. LOL - sweet - smooth - clean finishing Now, one of our favorite drinks is Gin Rickey's. My wife and I are just starting to get into alcohol (other than beer and mixed drinks, we're only 30) as an enjoyment. We both like sweet drinks that aren't insanely strong, if you know what I mean. The only real experience we have is shots of hard liquor. Haha. As I said, we're still young and just getting over our "party liquor" phayse if that's what you want to call it. Hahaha. Anyway, what would you guys suggest? Thanks so much in advance, Brian
Sweet, smooth, clean finishing, and not too strong? http://www.disaronnoasyoulikeit.com/ Disaronno Amaretto pretty well fits the bill & is available everywhere at a reasonable price.
there's a lot that could fit those requirements... dessert wines daiquiris mudslides rum & coke rum & sprite many a girly shot (red headed slut, etc) are you looking for something to just pour in a glass and be done with it? a mixed drink?
Well, first of all, thanks for all the suggestions so far. We both like dessert wines, she loooooves a good moscato, and I adore a good Port. We are looking for something to pour into a glass and be done with it. Does that help in the least? LOL As I said, we're still new to the whole "enjoyment" aspect as opposed to the "drink to party" that we've been doing for the past decade or so. Thanks again, Brian
We love port, but have been getting into this lately, and, well ..... if 'porn' was in a bottle [ ], this may be a fine sipper to try. Scotch liquor http://www.drambuie.com/ try a shot at a bar first.
Good scotch whiskey for the man is not too strong nor is it difficult to "mix" - typically you just cut it with a splash or two of water or a cube or two of ice. For the lady - thats tough because ladies never want to gain weight and alcohol is a guarantee that you will. I would say wine for its health benefits in moderation.
Wow, you guys sure are helpful! Now I think we need to get to a liquor store or bar that has available all these suggestions. We live in a small town called Brownwood, Texas. Nothing much here. Haha. We do make it to Austin quite regularly, so we'll have to make an evening out of trying these out. Of course, I'll have her taste them all and I'll be the DD. LOL Please keep the suggestions coming, I want to create a list of drinks to try. Thanks so much again for all your help and suggestions, Brian
Want something very special? Try some Wild Turkey Liquor. 99% liquor store will tell you about the 80% and bonded Wild Turkey and tell you You are nuts. When you do find it, you will like it. It is the only bourbon which my wife will drink. She does not like the dark spirits. 12 cylinders or walk
Have you tried cognac? Give Rémy Martin or Courvoisier a try. If you like tequila, Don Julio is one of the best. If you like bourbon, check out http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/index.php.
If you are tired of Port you could try Sherry or Madeira. If you like gin you could try sloe gin which is not bad. I am not sure what you mean by sweet. Some scotches are sweet and so is Malibu Rum which is disgusting. You could try some Cognac or Armagnac. I would start with one that is at least 5 or 6 years old meaning an XO or VSOP. You could drink straight Cointreau if you wanted.
Haha, you guys are great. By sweet, I mean something that's not dry and doesn't have such a bite to it. Cheap tequila has a bite, we don't like that. I really appreciate all the suggestions you guys have given so far. We need to get to a bar that will allow us to take a taste of everything you guys have recommended so far. Keep them coming!! Thanks again, Brian
I think what you are looking for is St. Germain. http://www.stgermain.fr It's a great sipping liquor. It is a little sweet with just a touch of alcohol bite. I often drink it as an aperitif, but it's also nice to come home, pour an ounce to sip while I'm thinking about what I might really want to drink. It's a nice warm-up. I guess some people mix it, but I like it neat.
Don't know scotch, so I will let others give their opinions. I don't like the idea of 'sweet' liquor as an aperitif. To me, Frangelico, Amaretto, Ports and Sauternes are for dessert (OK, maybe Sauternes sometimes with salad or cheese at the beginning of a rich meal). Before dinner or to unwind I like either Gin or Vodka, typically in Dry Martini form. Alternately, a good Cabernet or Bordeaux is never out of place. If going the Martini route, and you want to share with the wife, the ladies usually prefer Vodka over Gin. Good vodka is not sweet but will not burn your throat like those college day shots. You don't need to hide it or dress it up. If it is still too much alcohol for the lady in your life, make a dry vodka martini for yourself, then do the same for her, but add an equal part of simple syrup and a squeeze of lemon or lime juice to take the edge off of her drink. Alternately, if you need something weaker, gin & tonic or vodka tonics are simple and typically don't cause hangovers. Remember, the 'sweet' is typically there to 'hide' the liquor so if you enjoy the liquor itself, mixing it and hiding it under a ton of sugar may make it go down easier, and may get you loopy quicker, but is ultimately like, well, putting sound deadening and a soft suspension in a Ferrari. As a general rule, I think people say they don't like 'dry' wines & liquor because they've been drinking bottom shelf stuff. Once you get good stuff, 'dry' is not a bad word. Disclaimer: The above is just my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions being like...bellybuttons. Everyone has one.
For desert wines/ moscato you cant beat one by Bonny Doon Vineyards. Also, maybe look into a larger selection of craft and microbrewed beers, if you have never had a Framboise I highly reccomend trying one as it fits all of your criteria.
+1 to those that mentioned: B&B - excellent after dinner when you ate too much. Settles the stomach. Lemoncello - excellent when the heat of Summer rolls around. I prefer this after dinner as well. I prefer to make my own. Problem I find with sweet before hand is it crashes my palette for dinner. Both myself and better-half prefer Scotch to unwind. I do about 4 drops of water and she does ice. White wine would be another excellent choice for unwinding after work, especially on the deck with some cheese while gearing up for cooking dinner. Fruity Red Wines such as Syrah, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel would be nice choices as well.
