A favorite of mine, was Sid Colberg (San Francisco) telling me about the GTO he passed on a few years earlier, thinking that $8500.00 was just too much for an old race car. This was around 1978 with GTOs then being traded at $25,000.00.

Sid had no sympathy for my lamenting the SWB at $3500.00.

Don't mean to disagree with you, but I believe GTO's were coming close to $100k by '78. Nick Mason bought #3757 that year for roughly $85,000 USD. I believe that GTO's were in the $20k-$25k range during the first half of '75, if anybody knows of more sales, that'll help.

Hey, don't sweat selling the SWB for $3500. Misery loves company. In July 1970, SWB #2443 was sold to a collector in Switzerland in good running condition for 7000sfr, which, using the 1970 exchange rates, equals to approximately $1,600 USD. The car was sold again in February 1976 for 33000sfr, roughly $12,000 USD. Both were definitely bargains for their respective times.

Yes, that could be; I don't know what year Sid was talking about (those are the numbers he quoted) but it was 1978 when he related the story to me.

He bought in 74 or 75 and sold in approx 90

In the ad copies you posted the $9500 330GTS was the one I bought from that R&T ad.

I also knew Pete Sherman (exotics) who was tragicall killed when his P38 crashed on the way to oshkosh

Ha! That is so cool! I know you think that was a fair market price, but I actually think you acquired it at bargain price; another 330GTS was offered in HMN 11/74 for $12k, and another in HMN 1/76 for $14.5k. If you still have it, you could probably add two zeros next to what you paid.

Even more interesting, the seller had a 330 GTC and said he would sell either one for the same price. Sellers name was Ashley "Dick" Price, the advertiser was his mechanic.

I dont like convertibles that much (see my prev post about the Daytona Spyder for $1500 more than the coupe I bought) but the GTS was a nicer car.

    Regards John

The only convertibles I drool over are the 250 Californias and the series I PF cabrios, the other ones I never really cared for. It always bugged me how much people were paying for Daytona Spy's.

I'm trying to find this ad from 1981 advertising an SWB California in mint condition for $75,000, and a Daytona Spy with higher mileage , and in "good' condition for $85,000. I think the Daytona was overpriced, but was the Cali priced fairly? It's the only ad I have regarding those cars from that time frame.

No, I don't own and/or am looking to buy a Ferrari right now, and don't think it's worth the price just to look at old selling prices. I hope to acquire one, though, for it would end my quest for old prices.

Incorrect. Kerry Payne of Woodside/CA sold 250 LM #5909 to Robert Epstein of Piedmont/CA in March 1977.

Just saw this thread while browsing with the thought of getting back into the market. I picked up the attached during one of my regular visits to Overbrook while in high school, and still have vivid memories of sitting in the LM and chasing the 340 MM down West River Drive in Phila in my E-type. The mechanics were allowed to take the cars home at night to keep them limber.

Sorry if the page order becomes scrambled in that attachment process.

Were Tillson and White friends? As that address in Overbrook is where Mike Tillson is currently located. I live in Bala Cynwyd just across city ave, but too bad I don't see LM's around.

    Why?

Ever thought that these cars were sold for cheap when this nation was more occupied with doing greater things??

I had a 1959 Tour de France--Paid $1200 for it in 1967 in Italy. Spent another $2300 on it --paint; engine work; new leather.
A really nice guy from Fairchild, that had Lorenzo Bandini's 250GT, was the guy that found it and had the work done for me.

Brought it to US and sold for $6,700 to a guy in Berkeley after driving it around for awhile--saw it at a car show once years later

In 1969 I bought a 1963 Lusso from that (sorta) fat guy in Milan that used to advertise in Road and Track and had a whole garage filled with neat cars--Muira, Alfas, several ferraris. When I walked in, thought I was going to get a 275gtb but the lusso was sooo pretty I couldn't resist! Price was $5,750 landed in San Francisco. Loved that car. Sold it --to a woman from LA to pay for my last year at Berkeley. $6,900. Hard to believe you could pay for a whole year of school for that little ($2000--had to payback the loan from relative--kept the diff).

Guy in Milano--Viviano Corradini, who called himself "Lavasser"? (had some laundromats). His ads were in R&T almost every month.

Not sure if its the same one, but I happened to find an ad for one in HMN Dec. '83, and figured I'd post it.

I think this one was sold for $1300 back in 1953, though it might've been another 2900B.
