Dino Saga 081026 _ Getting ready for Avila Beach

Maybe the Gods are trying to tell me something. Fired up the car Tuesday morning and all was fine. Ran down to the “$10 Hand Car Wash” to get the last couple of weeks dirt off. Ten minutes for normal cars, 15 for the Dino. Guys use pressure washers to knock off big stuff, a guy on each side uses a big fluffy mitt to soap up the entire car, pressure washer again to knock off soap. Then rinse thoroughly with DI water and done. You stay in car with motor running for the entire time. Rinse usually takes place in a tunnel. The Dino is too low so I drive around tunnel and they use a garden hose and nozzle to go all over the car with DI water. No dry, no spots. As I drove out of the place, the engine sounded funny. As I got the revs up I got the sick feeling that I had heard that sound before. A plug had popped out of one of the exhaust spacers and I had a LOUD pop every other rev. Popped the engine lid. Front bank, Damn.

Two years ago I would have just cursed a little, jacked up both sides, placed stands, pulled both rear wheels, pulled the gravel shields, got manifold nuts from left, loosened manifold to muffler bolts on right and pulled the three spacers. My lung cancer leaves me just enough strength to walk from house to car and sit down. I have to farm out every bit of labor. I have used Mastercraft Motors a few times over the past 2 years and have found them careful of the car and good mechanics. Their specialty is German cars but they bought out Bianchi Motors, a SB Ferrari specialist of legend. Jack helps when needed and the shop has enough gear to work on everything up to 360s for sure. There was a 308 in one bay. Lots of stuff does not need to get into the computers and they know what they don’t know. Refreshing.

I brought the car in, told them what was wrong, how to get the parts out and how to fix them. They listened, didn’t argue and did it. At rebuild I pressed aluminum plugs in spacers and locked the plugs in with a 10-32 screw. A screw had come out and there went the plug. I told the guys how to make a new plug, take screws out of the two good spacers, take all three to a TIG welder and weld the plugs in. Next morning I got the call, all done! Picked the car up and gulped at the labor bill. Oh well, $17.00 for parts. I would have taken almost as many hours. Picked up the car and all was right again.

Back to cleaning things up a little for the concours. I have no interest in having the car judged but it is fun to show it off. The blue is different and really comes alive when the sun comes out. I planned to drive to Pismo Beach Saturday afternoon, get a nice motel, drive the 2 miles to Avila Sunday morning and head back to SB around 4 PM. I have large and small oxygen bottles and an oxygen concentrator. Small bottles last an hour, large about 4 hours. Concentrator runs as long as you have a plug. I can walk about 50 ft between rest stops so should be able to get everywhere in 5 hours. So nice that the Dino fits me perfectly. Absolutely no effort to drive once I get settled. Still most fun you can have with your clothes on. Three teasers today. Lots of pictures next week.

John, I had no idea you were struggling with this problem.

As much as I admired you before, my admiration just tripled because of your perseverance and attitude in the face of such headwinds.

It was a great time. An awesome corral of Ferrari's. A sleeper car show that is destined to grow.
Low key and elegant event lasting 4 days. Culminates with show on Sunday at Avila Beach. Beats the tarmac in Monterrey.

John, Scott, Tish and Tom, and myself were the Dino reps. All 4 are great cars. Nice to see you folks there. Between our four cars we traveled between 9 miles and 1000 miles to get there.

    More pics to come.
