fwiw i wouldn't do FF's job for <$150ph, too many overheads and liabilities and in the end the scalability is very limited. same here, well, not quite... but in 1999/2000 i was quoted $800 something for an alternator for my Sh!tsubishi Cordia GSR, i found one for $55 and gave them that.
Believe me, I know what's really involved. A straight engine rebuild on a V12 Ferrari is $50K without blinking. I'll get it done for $20K but at the cost of a big chunk of my own time. I also went down the DIY path because I wanted to attend to all the little things that were annoying me (eg. overspray on chassis fittings) but didn't justify paying someone to fix. When I did the nut & bolt resto on my Queen Mary in 1991, it took 6 months and cost $120K, doing all of the dismantling and reassembly myself. WOFTAM but I was proud of the result and the car still looks good 16 years later.
also, much more interesting (and challenging) than another check book restoration. i respect a car (and owner) who has grease under the fingernails more than the one who just signs the cheque.
+1 Many times I've seen guys arrive on the scene with egos and a cheque book. They buy, and have expensively restored, nice cars, but they know dick-all about them and usually drift off after a year or two.
and i'm the angel on top of the tree.... except i spend a lot of time and money and still end up with nothing
it's not much of a tree, and the 348 is too new a car to consider a resto. it's gotta be over 30 in my book - the exact opposite to my women that would explain the tree up your ar.........
Does anyone know the hourly rate(s) for Ferrari dealer servicing (Zagame, Prestige Formula, Italia Motori, Barbagallo etc.) ?
Thanks for the honesty. I'm on the other side of the planet but it's the same here. Nobody is charged for work that wasn't done and the reality of it is that there are many unbilled hours. If a job is clearly defined and takes 2 hours then a customer pays for 2 hours. This is somewhat rare though. In a full 40 hour week I can realistically bill 20-30 hours max. Markup on parts is another story. Typically between 10 and 40 percent depending on where it's purchased from and what it is. Almost everything is shipped in from out of town so shipping has to be added (If the customer wants the car on Friday the $10 part might have a $40 shipping charge).
From what I've seen, the dealers often do little jobs particularly cheaply... It's known as "loss leading" in marketing.
I've seen it happen. I worked at a shop that always seemed to have "dust collectors" that never got worked on until the customer came in. Never tell a shop owner that you "don't need the car right away" and to "work on it when you have spare time". That translates into "never". I want your car done and back in your garage as soon as possible (I get the money and have space for another). I try not to promise tight deadlines with exotic cars. There are too many variables and the result is too much stress for all concerned. Some cars don't want to be rushed.
it happens a bit for sure... many varied reasons why.. but I have a greater problem with getting rid of finished cars and waiting for parts. eg...... car dropped in for job to be done over this week. parts ordered ages ago and should have been here 2 weeks ago... dealer only part... dealer hasn't delivered... owner due back from trip and expecting car to be ready.... who's fault? AND.. found out today that the part in question, (which I also bought last year for another car) has only been ordered for me... no stock to be held in the country.. part... 550 control arm bushes... now becoming a very common failing...
He was being cheeky to 'Moderetti'...............and Wax showed him the door!! http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=147024
I read the thread, it didn't seem like a big deal to me. You guys in OZ do speak a different language. I must have missed something. I just try to look at "The Big Picture" when things get hot.
Yes its very complicated here, issues been around for years, the "big picture" is complicated. Just enjoy the ride
