I'm looking at renting a car in Cancun and driving to Xcalak. Any safety risks in doing so? Will be traveling daylight hours.

We rented a car in Cancun, and drove to Chichen Itza. Great trip, one encounter with police who spoke no english, they were looking for drug smugglers, I think, they did have big guns.

Rest of the trip was uneventful. Stopped at a Cenote in Valladolid and went swimming.
    All daylight traveling.

We have a place in Cancun and know the area from many years back. You should not have a problem but be careful with the road conditions. The road from Cancun to Playa del Carmen / Xpuja is good but watch it from there to Mahahual / Xcalak since it's a badly maintained two lane road most of the way. Have great trip and post some pics on your return. :)

Just came back from Cancun and drove for a week a rented vehicle to Chichen-Itza, to Tulum, X-caret, etc. To Chichen-Itza there is a 4 lane toll road and the speed limit is 110 but everyone goes 10-20 km more. it is a nice road.
Traveling south is another problem...we saw some bad accidents and the road after Playa Del Carmen becomes two lanes and it gets worse near Xen-La and Tulum. Keep the speed limit as there is numerous police and it is best traveled during the day. There are many speed bumps but they are marked..this road will require your full attention. Also make sure you have your passport with you as there is a checkpoint just south of the airport.
    Have a good time
