He had a rough 8 months, but put up a great fight. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/more/01/29/barbaro.ap/index.html?cnn=yes
Man I really hate to hear this. I Have had to put down a mare last Spring and a foal the year before. While they both were upsetting the foal really got to me. That has to be the only part of the Thoroughbred business I hate the most. I know the owners have to to be sick about this right now.
Yup, RIP Barbaro. I had him in nearly all my Preakness bets, and I knew something was wrong as he was getting into the gate. When he pulled back, my stomach dropped. He was a good horse, and it's a shame he had to be put down. :/
I did too, until I heard about the problems with the other hoof, and with all that weight not being able to be distributed in the rear, well, I kinda knew it would come to this. Any loss of innocent life is sad, be it human or animal. One thing is for sure, though, the Vets learned a helluva lot, and you can bet when this happens again - and it will - the chances of the next horse surviving will be vastly improved because of what they learned with Barbaro.
What they learned will be his legacy, not the Kentucky Derby win. Very sad for the horse and everyone who loved him. RIP Matt
