I don't even believe I'm writing this. Last Saturday after attending C&C I drive back to the Hyatt to check out. ( stayed there a couple of days to see some friends and go to the spa).Anyway, The valets directed me to an underground "valet only" parking area to self park, where they place exotics and special vehicles. Only valets are allowed in this area and the space in which they placed me is nice and wide with no other vehicles around. I go upstairs to pack and check out.(one hr.)pick up the car and drive back to Manhattan Beach to park the car. Just as I was putting on the car cover I glanced down at the drivers door and saw what looked like a black shoe scuff and fracture crack to the paint on the lower right corner of the door. I couldn't believe it, I had just tipped the valet the obligatory $20 bucks to self park in a supposed safe area and another $5 bucks to the guy that sat in the security booth. I was polite and courteous and not a pompus jerk. Obviously, one of the valets took it upon himself to kick the car, maybe it was the security booth guy who felt he needed a twenty as well? who knows? Why is it some jerks feel an obligation to physically and or verbally abuse our cars.....unbelievale! Well, I haven't reported the incident to the Hyatt management as of yet but it's not going to be a pleasant day for them when I do. I'm sure they will deny any responsibility and it will cost me a substantial bit of $ to repair the damage. Stay away from this hotel with your high end vehicle.
I hate to hear this happen. Look at the positive side, at least they didn't kick the motor that Eugenio meticulously just performed his magic on.
That is horrible!! It shows that there are still people out there with very primitive behavior. Unfortunately lots of them. I had my car parked at a park for about two hours at night for a friends birthday party, in a "nice" neighborhood. I should have known better, there was this AA/NA (whatever) meeting going on in the next building. Where there are obviously a number of disenfranchised members of our popualtion. When I came back to my car (they were all gone by then) some idiot took the liberty to spit on my hood. I guess they cannot fathom the shoe on the other foot. If it was their car and someone did the same thing to it. Unbelievable!!!
I get marks like that (without paint damage) every so often on my cars...it appears to be caused by a chunk of rubber tire flying up and hitting the car. I find these marks every month or two....
That really stinks!! I guess no place is safe when you have a nice car. Hope you can get it fixed soon.
Thanks everyone for your responses and ideas. Yeah, I thought about a piece of tire debris getting kicked up but I took coast highway back to Manhattan Beach (stop and go all the way) and don't remember seeing or hearing anything? I've contacted the Hyatt and received the run around so far,I don't expect any response from them at all, but the Hyatt can kiss off my staying with them ever again for any reason. If I do get a hold of them for any reason I will ask about the security camera....good idea, thanks David. Tomorrow I plan on drafting a formal letter or have my attorney do the same but as stated in a previous post I pretty sure I'm SOL. The sad fact is you can not leave our cars unattended for any length of time or at any perceived safe haven.Part of the lesson learned is ti inspect every inch of the car before leaving anyplace......... don't know what good it would do though since they will deny, deny, deny!
Anytime someone parks your car "out of sight" where it's safe, you should be suspicious. Parking your car where many people are is the best protection. Generally people are on their best behavior when others are watching. This isn't to say someone will not attempt something stupid, but the probability is less. The companies that park them out front in plain view of all to see with plenty of room between them is where you want to be. Don't let some low-life loser bring you down. Any person with that kind of disposition will forever be a card carrying member of the "I serve you" club. Get it fixed fast and enjoy your car!!
Time is of the essence here. Take pictures, and report quickly. The more time that passes, the less of a case you have.
This is very true. You should have advised the hotel immediately upon noticing the damage. Find out if they do have security cameras. If they give you the garbage that they are not liable, tell them to sit on it. The language on parking stubs is unequivocally ineffective. There is no "contract" to park your car. To contract you must specifically agree on terms. Did you agree to any terms when you parked? Of course not. That ticket represents a "license" only. MORAL: stay away from public parking! Go after them ASAP and don't back down! Do it now, however, by fax and not by phone to the hotel manager!
Actually you are SOL. I really hate that. This is what they will say, " When you left the hotel you did not notice this so there is no way we did this. This could have happened at a rest stop or the local 7-11. We are not responsible" Your best bet is to try and get security camera footage from the hotel. Try and go in the nicely and talk to the GM. If you go in like a bat out of hell, they will not help. Trust me I am a CISO. Then see if he will ask the Security Officer there to review the security tapes. This is a big resort so by law they are REQUIRED to keep these tapes for at least 6 years. Talk to the local police station and try to get the biz card of one on the detectives. This works well also. Make sure you are polite. If you kill them with kindness, you will see the person who kicked your car get kicked out of the hotel. Now, here is the catch. If this was another driver who parked his XSN next to yours and diddnt like your car, kicked it and left, use this. If the hotel is smart enough to build the parking for cars like ours, then they are smart enough to use security cameras. The cameras are there to protect valuable assets and it is the responsibility of the hotel to do this. If you catch a random person kicking your car, they should see what car he got out of which was registered at the front desk. The hotel should press criminal charges against that person and fix your car without question. If they can not identify the person, IT IS STILL THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO PROTECT YOUR ASSET!. They have to fix it. As for them, they will be SOL. You need to focus on 4 things. 1) Find out if there is security cameras. 2) Befriend the GM and Sec Officer. 3) Know your times and dates. 4) Just in case, have a lawyer ready. I wish you luck in this. If you let me know all the info, I can make a call here from Japan to their CISO and call in a favor. X
If you did not report it before leaving the property I don't see how you can be upset with the run around you say they are giving you.
The night I bought mine I stayed at the Victor in South Beach and the valet parking was in a garage down the street. But for a small nominal fee I could leave it on the street directly in front of the hotel. So I choose to pay the 50 bucks and have it where everyone could see it. I also tipped the valet for keeping an eye on it. I left the following morning with it just the way I left it.
Sorry to hear of your situation. My guess is that the parking guys are contracted and not Hyatt employees. This is why u will not get satisfaction unless u take extraordinarty measures. Years ago my lesson was a new Maserati that I let a valet park - the only one ever. He smacked the front end into a curb and it broke the mountings (injected molded piece). I discovered it and confronted them on the spot but they told me to call the boss the next day. The next day I did and they, of course, denied liability. I had no recourse; they were contracted by the restaurant who denied responsibility as well. Everyone just denied everything and it was my word against the parking company. So inre. valet parking - caveat emptor or park it yourself. Well, that doesn't help u out since u did and got vandalized. I cringe with fear when I have to turn over the keys to my exotic, but you can't live your life in a bubble. Wish I could help or add more, but I am just sorry for your experience. Valet parking liability/responsibility for your property is about the biggest scam on the planet.
They will deny and im sure they wont let you see the tapes if they exist. I valeted a Quattroporte i was lent for 3 days in a Meridien Hotel in Paris. The next morning the car had its left rims scratched all around. They denied and said i had no evidence.
Last year I took my new S500 to be detailed at a supposedly reputable car wash. While waiting in the car to be summoned by the valets, another valet backed to mobile-detailing truck across the front end of the car. In through one headlight and out through the grille through and other headlight (pricey HIDs). Immediately all the kids working came running over, then went running inside. In their place came numerous concerned customers while I just stood there shaking my head. At the time, the business gave me paperwork to fill out for the damage, but the next day they denied all liability. A year later, they paid in court to the tune of $20k. It sucks, really sucks, but it is just a car. Don't let it consume too much of your time or stress you out. Pictures below for your viewing pleasure and mental health. I had to pull into a motel on a road trip because I was too tired to drive any further (safely). My options at the moment were limited and I was in a seedy part of a seedy town, stuck with outdoor-only parking that fronted a street filled with Hispanic ghetto-cruisers popping up and down on air shocks whistling at hot girls on the sidewalk. Surprisingly, the motel had security; a huge, hulking Hispanic guy named Jose. I walked over to him and introduced myself casually to him. He wanted to check out my car. So I gave him the tour/show. Pretty soon 8 of his buddies show up, all with gang tattoos. The conversation revolved around prison life and my car. Well, Jose seemed like the decent sort, nonetheless. He wouldn't take my tip money to watch my car, but he did offer to share some tequilla with me. So the ten of us began drinking. Did I mention that I was already too tired to drive any further? When Jose drinks, everybody drinks, and he had a stash of some remarkably good booze. So there we were, outside in the motel parking lot watching hot girls on the sidewalk and ghetto-cruisers parade by on the street...drinking shots out of the back of Jose's decked-out pickup truck, with 9 other guys telling me about Hispanic prison life, what "Mujarah" really means, and at various times getting new tours of my 348. Somehow I kept getting more awake as time passed and the booze flowed. Oh, and Jose thought that it was the funniest joke in the world to pull out this huge knife and pretend to stab me. Actually, at that point we'd all had enough booze that I thought it was pretty funny, too. Well, the booze ran out and I managed to stumble into my motel room wondering if Jose was going to keep watch over my car for the rest of the night (morning). I woke up, checked out of the motel, and went out to my car. ... It was pristine. A couple of his buddies were in near-passed-out states in the back of his pickup, but they had maintained an all night watch over my car. Jose had told me that my car would be safe, and he was true to his word.
Excellent advice. A Ferrari tucked away in a dark parking structure is too tempting for the idiot vandals of the world.
When on a trip last year & parked car in the frnt of the hotel in plain sight . I mean directly in front . The spot that normallly you would temporarily park in if checking for vacancy . The next moring I came out scared to death & all was well . I recently let valet at prominent steakhouse take car with no problems . Another time Id valet my car (not the ferrari )at a certain club , when I went to get in later , the right door & 1/4 panel were caved in , the car was pristine when it was parked . They had the nerve to deny it was their fault & that itwas 'like that when it got there " . Called police , that settled it .Total night mare .
O.K. here's an update,as many of you have guessed no surprises! After a conversation with the head of security today to make a long story short the Hotel contracts out the parking/valet situation. therefore the Hyatt feels it has no responsibility to anything that happens to your car, whether it be vandalism, earthquake or an alien flying saucer that has strayed from it's path.BTW the Hyatt should be very proud of their head security officer, seriously, he was very polite and courteous and passed on my information to the gentleman who was in charge of parking. I received a call later from again, another very courteous gentleman that actually was reviewing the security tapes as I was on the phone. I thought great, now we'll see what happened........unfortunatly, there are four hi res cameras but they are only aimed at the entrance and exits (two in , two out) not where the car was parked. He asked if I would take some pics and forward them to him but what's that going to do that's of any use. So I will take some pics but as we all guessed it will lead to nothing being done. Screw it, &#%! happens, I'll call Craig at Tillack's and get it fixed right and move on...........some valuable lessons learned though! If anything positive happens I'll update. BTW, no responses of yet from the Hyatt manager at all.
