The really high end cars are usually owned by locals from the leading royal or merchant families. They often have the low digit plates which tend to be reserved for the right people. Most of the region's liquidity is driven by the price of oil, and Dubai as a non-oil producer is cashing in by providing ancillary servies around this boom. As a result property and stocks have gone mental (followed by a bust on stock prices, but property is still holding strong). A lot of investors without royal or merchant family connections made big money in these booms, but a lot who don't have the cushion of status and "old" money have also lost. Many of the smarter and harder working locals who are well connected and western educated usually end up running local medium sized companies, and are handsomely compensated. I don't think this trend can last forever, as often when they are compared to leading expat managers they tend to lack the right long-term credentials. Over time, I reckon we will see a lower proportion of these types of cars in the Dubai population, as wealth will start to even out. Alternatively, the property market will tank, war will break out across the Persian Gulf, business will bust, and it'll be time to head home for three quarters of the population!
