Here's our Stratos ready to go at the Bega rally on Saturday 11th. The weather turned to torrential rain overnight and we didn't want to risk the car on an unpredictable surface, so we pulled out of the event. Apologies for the over-exposed shots, I used my phone rather than a real camera.

    Ian,

    Is this a real Stratos?
It's hard these days to tell a real one from a clone in pictures.

If it is, all I can say is Wowwwwww! Nice.

Yes, its a real one. Chassis 1635, with a well documented competition history with private teams in Italy and the UK. There are 5 genuine cars in Australia, this is one of 2 Group 4 versions.

That's a Jolly Club car, second only to works cars for desirability. Jolly Club was a private Italian rally team that operated with Lancia factory support and won many important events, as the Stratos continued to win World Rally events long after Fiat management dropped it in favour of the Fiat 131. This car is probably worth 220-250K euros.

That's a lot of car for the money. I notice your car is registered, any problems getting that arranged?

Its on NSW historic rego, which is easy for cars over 30 years old. Just a normal "pink slip" rego inspection. No restriction for LHD. Our biggest challenge was getting the CAMS logbook, because the roll cage is part of the monocoque and can't be visually inspected. Luckily a Stratos was campaigned here in the late 70's and we able to get copies of its logbook and the original FIA papers. After that, CAMS were very helpful.

The Alitalia scheme is definitely the best looking, although the Marlboro colours work well. However, Alitalia is the Stratos equivalent of "resale red"...

the Stratos is what brought me to my love for exotics, the first car i specifically lusted after. it's also responsible for my unhealthy fetish for X1/9's, which i'll have to do with for the next 200 years until i can add the ultimate Bertone wedge to the stable.

sadly, X's don't carry the Alitalia warpaint so well... http://aussieexotics.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=24917

Mine was the Miura. I even stupidly bought the Miura book (green looking cover), thinking I could afford one one day.

A Bertone GT4 will have to do :)

have wanted a GT4 since not long after discovering the Bertone portfolio, but to me it still doesn't have the looks of the X, so primary reason for wanting it was to have a (psuedo)Ferrari and a V8 in the back. i'd probly rather go straight to a Jalpa then a Stratos on my path to bertone glory.

Aren't they just as hard to find (Jalpa and Silhouette) here in Aus?

Ash - you could always track down a Fiat Dino Coupe - another good Bertone design. Frank Cecchele still has his here in Perth I think. Sounds nice too and you could play at being the Mafia don from the Italian Job
