Ok. So my friend that normally is reasonable and at least listens to explanations of things he doesn't understand went on an hour long rant about how F1, or racing in general but F1 was the topic, is NOT a sport, because it requires no physical exertion whatsoever.

I explained to him the strain of the G-Forces, comparing F1 Drivers to Astronauts in that respect to give some degree of comparison to other athletes.

Can anyone link me to a list of standard (or above standard, ie Ferrari/Schumi's) training procedures? I know they must be in top physical condition to control an F1 car under such conditions, but have never seen an actual training guideline for them.

    Thanks!!

    You win.

"Formula One drivers are some of the most highly conditioned athletes on earth, their bodies specifically adapted to the very exacting requirements of top-flight single-seater motor racing."

Just Google around, there's tons on this.

Well, then it stands to reason there are NO other 'sports' in existence besides Football, Rugby, Soccer, Tennis, Track and Hockey.
Baseball and Basketball are both questionable, and you can forget golf, boxing, curling, bowling, cricket, rowing, skiing, field events and everything else.

Yep, that was a pretty good video.

Ask anyone here who has driven a car with high cornering forces, largely as a result of aero grip and racing slicks(e.g. 250cc Superkart, Formula 3, Formula 3000, Champ Car, F1, LeMans, FIA GT, etc) and they will tell you that your neck starts to hurt and you feel out of breath after about 10 minutes, if you haven't trained for the specific requirements of motor racing.

I've gone through this as well. It's always the guys who need to see a stick or ball to consider something a sport, and its participants athletes. I argued this with a guy and finally just told him that the fact he feels this way proves that he knows absolutely nothing about the sport. He was just basing his opinions on an uninformed bias.

now that I have this information, it said on formula1.com that drivers must drink exorbenent amounts of water before racing to compensate for the lost fluids from sweating, up to 3kg of body weight. Is there some sort of... fluid removal system for urination or anything? Are there any stories of F1 driver's having "accidents" during a race?

My understanding from an old Schummi quote is that he simply pees in his suit and it's dried out by the heat before the end of the race.

At the rate they are sweating, they won't be doing much urination. Their bodies will try to retain as much water as possible.

I remember Senna had a heart rate monitor attached to him this one year during the Japanese GP, I forget exactly how fast was his heart beating, I think it was something like 120/minute or something like that. He had to sustain that for at least 2 hours, try that with any professional football, basketball or tennis players (I won't even try baseball, have you seen what some of them looks like?).
