I assume it’s ok to drive and park in the rain, but the metal grates on the side of the glass covering my 488 seems to allow water to get in and over the engine.

Engine bay is designed to be water resistant and to drain incoming water from those vents. You'll be fine if it storms on top of your car in a parking lot.

It’s fine. The engine bay is designed to drain water, so it’s not like you’re going to get ‘flood damage’ from the odd rain storm.

For perspective, and I’ve posted this story before, I was completely stressed when I bought my first Ferrari. To wash the car, I would back the car out of the garage, make sure the engine bay was completely cool, tape plastic garbage bags over the engine because that’s what this site told me to do, and then still worry about how much water was getting in there.

When I picked up the car from its first big service with a very well known and respected Ferrari shop, the owner walked me though everything he had done. I was amazed at how spotless the engine bay was and asked how he did it . He replied ‘Oh it’s not a big deal. I just gave it a good soak with degreaser, let it sit a while then hit it with the hose.”

Have to say, from that day forward I haven’t stressed about a bit of water here and there. And I’m a teeny bit embarrassed that I did stress so much early on.

You void the warranty if you drive your Ferrari in the rain. Indeed, you void the warranty if you drive your car at all. It is far better to let it sit in your garage.

There's only 2 reasons why not to drive it in the rain

    1) Its not much fun
    2) other idiots on the road who don't know how to drive in the rain!

Technically, there's no reason why not to in a modern car. Earlier car perhaps if you are trying to avoid rust issues later.

Uuhhmmm, there is a wet mode setting on the manettino. Also, you can put the vehicle into car-wash mode...

    There's actually 3 reasons.....here is the 3rd:

    3) can't remove the top (if targa model) or drop the top (if spider model) if it's raining, no fun to get wet while driving :D

If you drive fast enough it mostly misses the interior!

I have driven my 328 in the rain, maybe a dozen times. I cant remember all the circumstances, other than once a long time ago I wanted to drive the Ferrari so bad that I took it out in the rain no less. I remember driving in downtown LA, and sliding sideways now and again just for the fun of it.

I had to cover the drivers seat with a towel because the targa roof leaked a little on the drivers side, no big deal. In todays climate, I would never do that again. My 328 ran fine , no problems rain or shine.

Today I am grateful for my Q50 ,and since its AWD, it is the car I want to be driving the So Cal freeways in all of the torrential rain we have been getting.

Too much power to run in the rain or cold tires. Tires are dry weather only so not worth the risk and certainly no fun to drive in the rain and especially would be no fun to have to clean and detail it. DD for bad weather and winter. If car had a bunch of miles or damage then different story.

Yes, usually driving and parking in the rain is okay. However, metal grates might cause problems if water enters where the engine is. Water often leaks through these grates when they are not sealed well. You may want to think about having a mechanic inspect the grates or possibly seal them to avoid water causing harm to your engine.

I noticed there was a metal grate over the engine of my car, I want to make sure it's sealed up well.

Your assumption is incorrect - haven't you learned that your Ferrari will melt in the rain? :p :D

They’re made of sugar. That’s why it’s hard to get a nice paint job.

I’ve been caught in the rain twice. The paint didn’t fall off and the electronics still work fine. :)

Had to pull over for a bit on the way to the FCA National in Mont Tremblant a few years back, got caught in a torrential rain storm with hail (small hail, thankfully), probably the worst rain I'd been caught out in, ever. Saw a tornado spinning off in the distance, that was a first for me. Car was just fine (though at the time I was wondering what I had gotten myself into).
