Ferrari showed some promise in the first race. The car looks to be plenty fast.

They should do 1 major upgrade where possible and focus completely on 2022. This season is between Red Bull and Mercedes outdeveloping each other, this is Ferrari's biggest chance to seize an opportunity for 2022. Chasing an utterly pointless win in 2021 is just that...pointless.

I think Redbull is going to take it. Bemz without the DAS is going to be problematic for Hamilton. Redbull should have had that race. Hamilton cut turn 4 29 times and shaved 6 seconds. He should have been penalized. Bottas actually should have won..but as usual bemz sabatoged his race.

That Merc rear end is a bit loose, it just is. It's not going to be friendly on soft tires. Count on Ferrari beating them on pace at least a couple times this year. Red Bull can do this if their number 2 driver is consistent and can work the occasional tail gunner position for Max. Max is such an incredibly hot property, he's just fast in anything it's incredible to watch.

Hold your horses. We've seen the cars perform on 1 track only. Historically speaking this has been a strong track for Ferrari and a ''weak'' track for Mercedes, and Ferrari finished a full minute behind. Lets wait to see how Mercedes performs on different tracks and lower temperatures.

    I'm not convinced just yet...

Ferrari is just going to have to wait until Mercedes leaves the series. They don't have any idea of how they won in the past, so for now they just put out press releases about "next year." And when Mercedes does leave F1, Ferrari will be lucky if they come in second. The only thing that could save Ferrari would be if Toto Wolff bought the team, fired everyone and replaced them with the Mercedes team.

Ferrari could become like Williams, and never be a top team again.

Winning championships isn't a right; you have to deserve them.

Agree but they also need to regain confidence.
A couples of wins would be very valuable for the whole team.

I agree that wins are a nice confidence booster but to win on merit is a HUGE expense for Ferrari now, for a car concept that'll be retired at the end of the season. Regain confidence in building a spectacular 2022 car instead.

    "Tomorrow should be better".
Thinking like that is counterproductive, and an excuse for lack of result.
A top team don't believe in fairy tales, and works hard all the time and every year aiming for success.
They don't postpone their effort "for when it will be worth it", they are constantly looking for improvement.
That's the difference between Mercedes and Ferrari.
When Mercedes starts a season on the back foot, they put all their energy in coming back to the front.
They don't sacrifice one or more years, waiting for a better opportunity that may never come.
I am talking about ambitious teams here, the front runners, not the mere participants.

This isn't the 90s anymore when you ''simply'' upgrade the engine, chassis and aero and you'll be at the sharp end of the grid again. Teams are hugely restricted now more than ever. There is only so much you can do with whatever you've got right now.

Lets get real here. Ferrari's race pace is 1 second a lap behind the leaders. Qualifying time is 8 tenths to a second off. With Red Bull and Mercedes developing their car in their battle for the title (as makes perfect sense), they'll get faster. You don't simply find a second in F1, especially not in the current era. You can't simply upgrade your engine next weekend and suddenly you're fast. Or change part of your suspension. It's locked. You can't touch it.

Fact of the matter is the rules change completely for next year. Almost nothing will carry over for 2022. What's the point in chasing a win or two now if a championship is extremely unlikely? Todays developments don't carry over for next year. I can't stress that enough. It's literally throwing away resources away in a bottomless pit that could be far better spend in actually preparing properly for the next chance when they do have a chance of winning titles.

You mention Mercedes, they've started every single season this hybrid era at the front end of the grid. They didn't have a full second gap to overcome to try and win a title. They didn't have have to find a full second and not have their car carry over for the next season. It's incomparable.

Ferrari have a perfect scenario right now:
Red Bull and Mercedes appearing to fight and develop throughout 2021 for the title, not concentrating as much on 2022.
A new tiered development system where the worse placed you are in the championship, the more you're allowed to develop
A brand new set of regulations for next year....
Well filled coffers and they can easily afford to lose several sponsors (if that was the case)
Ferrari not relevant in the championship so they can fully concentrate on their 2022 car.

In fact it all depends on how much Mercedes will be able to secretly invest on this new regulation. I have the feeling that we will wake up again cuckold ..

    All that is speculation.

Ferrari will have to find different excuses in future if they don't win.

Always waiting for divine intervention will see them wasting many years.

I don't like Red Bull, but they are always fighting. They don't wait for future regulations,

At Ferrari, they give up before the season starts !!!

Used to be a big fan, over now.
The brand is going down, as the sales of gadgets is higher than ever.
There used to be times that most Ferrari's values went upwards.
Now, most Ferraris loose their value faster than snow melts in the desert.

F1 is just the reflection of the catastrofic management inside the factory, at all stages.
It's got it all wrong at the helm of the firm.
As long there is no LdM for CEO to clean out the political and amateuristic pigstaw Ferrari has become, there is NO hope for the reds.

Ferrari went downhill management wise when Marchionne replaced Montezemolo with himself simply because he could. In the history of Ferrari, the importance of Montezemolo is second only to Enzo himself.

Time for Ferrari in F1 to show its true colors (and reasons for losing) and change the team name to FIAT.

But, FIAT has nothing to do with Ferrari anymore.

Those are 2 different companies, and FIAT is now part of Stellantis whilst Ferrari is completely independent.

Please explain to me which part exactly is speculation?

Ferrari is .8 a lap behind? Fact
Upgrading most parts of the car requires token spend? Fact
Winning a second back in F1 is hard? Fact
2022 rule change coming with almost nothing carrying over? Fact
Mercedes starting every season in the hybrid era at the front end of the grid? Fact
Throwing money away just to win a race or 2 isn't the best way to spend their time/money? Unless you consider climbing to 3rd in the WCC ambitious or more useful than focusing on getting the very best start for 2022 is better...

Ferrari was fighting for the titles (just) in 2017 and 18. Their 19 car they choose the wrong way to develop it chassis/aero wise. They made a mistake in the design of their all new car. **** happens. 2020 they got punished for their 2019 engine and had to re-design an engine in no time whatsoever. With limited options for 2021 they did a pretty good job all things considered.

The speculation is for Ferrari to believe that they can write off one or 2 seasons, and that would make them stronger in future.

For a team that has been competing since 1950, they must know that once you take your eye off the ball, it's very difficult to get back in the game.

It can't be about saving money, since with the coming budget cap, they won't be allowed to spend more than $145M anyway.

These pre-season talks about waiting for 2022, to get back in the winning circles are just defeatism.

I'm even surprised some people buy that BS. Ferrari is now the laughing stock: they don't even try!!

The lower they are in 2021, the more hours they get to spend in windtunnels. That's an advantage whichever way you look at it. Other teams that are very low down the field also have budget/personal issues so Ferrari in unique in their situation.

Ferrari is being realistic. The 2021 car doesn't carry over into 2022 so why bother wasting time on it? They will not win the title with it and best they can hope for is 3rd....which gets you fewer hours in the windtunnel.

With that sort of "bean counter" mentality, they may as well throw the towel, and finish last in the WCC.

They will get all the hours in the wind tunnel they need, but still with no certainty that policy will pay off !!!

But whilst Maranello plays silly games, teams with some ambition try to compete in 2021 and get some result.

There's no point finishing 3rd (or even 2nd) in the championship. So if focusing on 2022 gives them advantage why shouldn't they?
