Overall, a positive vibe from the new car. They pushed hard to get to RBR sized sidepods and with all the constraints of a frozen design and limited tokens they modified large areas of last year’s car, not least of which the engine.

Better to have a meh looking car with great performance, than the alternative. Of course they could be setting expectations for poor performance by making the car unrecognizable.;)

Ferrari has consistently maintained an inboard loaded car, whereas Mercedes has consistently maintaining an outboard loaded car. Aerodynamics is where F1 design has been for a long time.

I would surmise that this leads to greater downforce potential (and drag) for the Ferrari, who could overcome some of that with questionable combustion strategies that they have had to abandon (oil burn). Without that boost, the car will appear down on power due to the drag piling up on the car.

2021 is no different and therefore I would not expect substantially different results from prior years. They have already stated that suspension is unchanged.

This was explained two years ago...... but here we are saying THIS is the year it is going to work!

Same guy, one year later saying that teams are moving towards the Ferrari philosophy, like they ALL moved to the Ferrari sidepod concept:

“An inboard-loaded front wing, such as on the Ferrari, will exaggerate the difference in pressure at the transition point 250mm from the middle of the wing.

This will strengthen the y250 vortex and could be a part of the reason why most teams - even Red Bull and Mercedes, whose front wings retain a slightly different philosophy - have headed in this direction to some degree for this season.”

It would seem that the aero of the car STARTS with the front wing. Outboard teams have moved some air inboard to mimic the Ferrari cape and sidepod. Look at the 2021 Aston front wing. Only Ferrari seem to have remained steadfast on inboard loading. I have no way of analyzing its effectiveness, but the on track results have been less than successful vis-à-vis Mercedes. Perhaps the Ferrari CFD continues to tell a different story than the actual racing (recall their CFD/wind tunnel calibration issues of a few years back).

    Ferrari V6 Turbo Hybrid

Ferrari PU simplified. The turbo was at the back of the V6, with the MGUH in the "V". Charge air compressed by the turbo passes over the engine and into the charge cooler. Then cooled, passes back up into the two plenums, variable inlet trumpets and into the head.

So is that the old engine or the new, simplified one?

Right. Admittedly though, not too many other teams have approached the Merc’s successes either so they can’t all have bad wind tunnels. Merc hit on a good concept with low rake, extra long wheelbase and used its resources and developed it to perfection.

    Old.

The new one in 2022 will follow the Mercedes split turbo in the V with the MGU-H in the V.

And proved that a big name aero god is not at all needed. Mercedes aero has over-shadowed RedBull for years now. Yet we only hear about Newey. Really????
Mercedes have impressive power and aero. They have focused keenly on the aero deficiencies. Much credit must be shown to them for this.

Now if Ferrari will move this way for 22 I will be happy. We do know the focus now is not this 'new' car for 21 but next year. Binotto has stated that very clearly. We should be happy if its faster overall.

--With regards to the actual design of the car, there’s been plenty of attention to it to ail its shortfalls from last season. Ferrari has stayed pretty true to the thumb-tip nose designs used over the past few years, and although it has avoided following the same direction as some of its rivals in opting for a thinner variant, it has also elected not to retain the status quo. Rather than squaring off at the wing mountings, Ferrari has let the nose transition into the thumb-tip crash structure in more of a tear-drop shape, also shuffling the mounting pylons in board slightly.

This keeps the nose channels that Ferrari first introduced in the second half of 2019, but opens up the cape under the nose to allow more interplay between the front wing and the aero parts underneath the front of the car.

The front wing is a continuation of the same concept used by the team over the past couple of seasons, although the second element is now united with the mainplane to leave the important tip vortex generation - which is fired underneath the front suspension to direct the front wheel turbulence outwards - to the top three elements. The trailing edge of the endplate has been reworked to include a curved cut-out of the upper corner, with a fin at the rear of the footplate helping to turn airflow outwards. This, presumably, is to help work the airflow later on to compensate for any losses to the floor.

Ferrari has followed some of its competitors and opted for the shutter blind-style array that should help to lift airflow up and outwards. Admittedly, it doesn’t look like a very neatly proportioned addition, but sometimes the most utilitarian-looking components are the most valuable
Ferrari did not run any fins on top of the nose, located between the two front wheels, last season – but it has opted for an aggressive-looking quartet of winglets either side that seem to be turning airflow out and around the car. These will play with the re-designed S-duct, which picks up any turbulent areas of flow around the nose and redirects them to the top of the chassis to keep the front end working as intended.

There are changes to the bargeboards too, with a remodelled leading edge - perhaps as a legacy of the newly added talon-like fins on top of the chassis. It retains the twin-boomerang arrangement, mounted between the main bargeboard arrangement and the outer vanes mounted to the sidepods. It appears that, of those sidepod-mounted elements, the main piece (marked with the Radiobook decal) has been set down slightly compared to last year, perhaps to play more nicely with the redesigned sidepods.

Shadowing that is a secondary element mounted closer to the sidepod inlet, so perhaps the outboard red-coloured part has been manoeuvred to work more with any turbulence from the front wheels. Between this and the outboard mountings for the boomerang elements, Ferrari has followed some of its competitors and opted for the shutter blind-style array that should help to lift airflow up and outwards. Admittedly, it doesn’t look like a very neatly proportioned addition, but sometimes the most utilitarian-looking components are the most valuable. There’s also a new pair of fins on the top surface of the winglet before the sidepod, one decorated in the colours of the Italian flag. It had to go somewhere, after all.

Ferrari, like most teams, had used the top surface of the sidepods to sweep airflow down to the floor to help maximise the diffuser’s effectiveness. It has done so again for 2021, but with a more pronounced tuck-in to help open up more of the floor available. With the reduction in floor size, the teams which have launched before have attempted to reduce the sidepod size even further to make more floor available to use – and Ferrari has done the same.

It’s unclear what Ferrari’s approach to floor developments are at this stage, given that the team tried two separate designs over the course of 2020 – a curled rear corner the first, and the second featuring set of inward-facing fins – so it won’t be unexpected to see a development of those ideas. The launch model seems to feature the curled variant but, as we’ve seen from other teams, this could simply be a placeholder.

Forward of the heinous green decal on the engine cover, Ferrari has retained the horns that it reintroduced into the F1 lexicon last season. They’re less defined as Ferrari has increased the size of the intake, opting for a rounder shape by adding two extra openings either side of the triangular roll structure, but that allows the team to reduce the side of its sidepods. These horns should help to tidy up the airflow before it reaches the rear wing. Within, there's the revised power unit and a new gearbox too, as Ferrari has used its two permissible tokens on reworking the rear end of the car.

As the Ferrari transitions from its bright red into its beef stock-packet claret, the rear wing follows suit. The launch renders seem to have the rear wing in much the same construction as that used by Ferrari at the higher-downforce circuits on the 2020 calendar, including the later-season redesign of the endplates and the spoon-shaped rear wing. The team has also kept the under-over shotgun exhausts used last year, suggesting that the basic architecture under the skin remains the same.--

What looks like crap, drives like crap.
Besides that, it's amazing they still got this Binotto idiot onboard.
    Ferrari is going down.
As long a CEO like LdM is not coming over to restructure and clean up the mess Ferrari has become, this brand is going down at full speed.

Ferrari not expecting Sainz to be "fully integrated" by first F1 race
    By: Luke Smith

    https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/ferrari-not-expecting-sainz-to-be-fully-integrated-by-first-race/5679122/

Ferrari Formula 1 chief Mattia Binotto is not expecting Carlos Sainz to be fully integrated with the team by the start of the new season in Bahrain.
Sainz will make his first public appearance in a Ferrari F1 car later this week when pre-season testing gets underway at the Bahrain International Circuit.

But with just three days of testing this year before the first race of the season in Bahrain, drivers changing teams have been left with a limited window in which to get up to speed.

Although Ferrari has tried to assist Sainz's integration at Maranello by arranging private tests in recent F1 cars and plenty of simulator mileage, team boss Binotto acknowledged he may not be completely adjusted by the opening race.

It's not like he's been doing a bad job. Never had a factory engine and continuously fights among factory teams, despite their engine in the hybrid era.

His last 2 cars in particular have been very tricky to drive. They where lucky they had Verstappen to not finish well out of the top 3. But as is normally the case with Newey and his tricky cars, he tends to be onto something, and once he nails the theory, he delivers machines with astonishing performance.

"No big progress," says Haas boss Ferrari's engine improvement

Haas racing boss Günther Steiner assessed Ferrari's progress over the winter with its powertrain. And according to him, this is not a huge step forward.

According to some estimates, the new Ferrari engine could be 40 horsepower more powerful than last year, which was the weakest in the race field. Scuderia announced that with the new version there was a significant shift and withdrawal of the shortfall to the strongest.

Although progress can be felt by some pilots, Steiner said it was no miracle: "I can't say it's a big step forward. I'd show Ferrari that I'm happy with what they're giving us, and I can't do that." smiling Haas chief.

"It's never enough in motorsport. If you said yes, then something would be wrong. In my opinion, this is moderate progress. The engine is better than it was last year," Steiner said, adding that this year, instead of Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen is driven by two newcomers: Nikita Mazepin and Mick Schumacher.
    img-responsive

According to him, Ferrari's move will of course also depend on the progress of the competition: "We don't know what the other engine manufacturers did, we simply don't have the numbers. I don't have Ferrari numbers either. But I trust Ferrari when they tell me they improved the engine."

Steiner criticized the performance of the Ferrari power unit several times last year, so some suggested that Haas could change its supplier. "I didn't hide it, no. And I told Matti [Binotto] in private conversations, too. It's nice to see that they've really made some progress."

Lower than declared profits for F1news.cz are also confirmed by engineers of the customer Alfa Romeo. Carlos Sainz from the Ferrari factory also does not deny higher performance, but according to him it will not be enough for them to reign on the straights as 2 years ago: "I will not lie to you - I do not think we will be the fastest on the straights. that others have also gained performance - for example, Honda and Mercedes. "

The question is how much more horses will help Haas, which no longer developed last year's car - it did not even draw any allowed chips. He started the tests last week with only a few minor modifications - mostly the obligation of the types of cut-outs in the rear corners of the floor, changes to the side panels or shortening of the vertical elements in the diffuser. The American team makes no secret of the fact that this year it will prefer to dedicate its resources to the car for the turning point of the 2022 season.
