2021 F1 changes

    As a tv spectacle, monaco is a disaster. As a race weekend to visit in person, it’s great! However, as this year showed, the monaco race wouldn’t be missed if it didn’t happen again.

    As for 2021, it looks like it’s going to be another lottery season for the calendar. I don’t mind that if that means lots of interesting tracks like mugelo and portimao. But hopefully they can keep the 2021 cars, that have been deferred to 2022, on track and not deferred yet again.

    A few aerodynamic changes will be introduced in 2021, that will affect the floor pan, and the diffuser.

    With less downforce, the cars will be more difficult to drive, it is predicted.

    We will see if that affects the order we had in the last few years.

    Also, Ferrari will have improved its power output, so 3 teams should be a bit faster.

    Do you read this to indicate that the steering mechanism should be identical for the entire year ? or that they are alowed to make 1 for Monaco ??

    No, only that some dimensions should be imposed to make the cars shorter, narrower to make passing possible and allow racing on street circuits.

    At present, 5m long cars, 2m wide with 3m wheelbase have no place at Monaco, IMO.

    Removing Monaco is removing the last bit of soul that built F1 - the eccentric characters, the glamour, the wealth, the girls, the noise.

    Regarding Portimão, I hope they don't ever come back - there were way more than 50k people in the stands when the maximum allowed capacity was 27,5k.
    Coincidentally or not, Covid cases spiked after the race weekend - from hundreds to thousands a day.

    Mercedes boss Toto Wolff thinks there is no chance Formula 1 teams will be able to produce faster cars next year in the wake of downforce cuts.

    In a bid to reverse the dramatic performance gains that teams have unlocked, which are putting tyres under more and more stress, a raft of changes have been made to the 2021 rules.

    As well as tweaks to the diffusers and brake ducts, the key difference will be a clampdown on the floor area of the car ahead of the rear wheel.

    The reduced area that teams are able to work with will have a dramatic change on how much airflow can be exploited to help improve downforce.

    While teams are hopeful of clawing back some of their losses, Wolff has shot down any suggestion they will recover enough lap time to become even quicker in 2021.

    "I don't think so," he said. "The aero was cut back considerably on the floor around the tyres, and it's going to take a while to catch up.

    "We're still right in the middle of our development for next year, but I doubt we will be there quickly.

    "In that respect, and with the tyres going a notch harder, I don't think we will near the lap times that we have seen this year. At least not in the first half of the year."

    The Friday FP1 and FP2 sessions is set to be just for one hour in 2021 as the FIA regs state. No reason given but could be for the carryover/cost saving - back to 1.5 in 2022.

    Ferrari sporting director Laurent Mekies thinks Formula 1 teams will have to do a lot of "head scratching" to get on top of Pirelli's new 2021 tyre compounds.

    After initially planning to stay on the current tyres for a third consecutive season, Pirelli has developed new prototypes in the wake of several high-profile tyre blowouts during the 2020 season.

    Pirelli's new compounds, which are more robust but slightly slower and have an impact on the handling of the car, weren't very well received by the drivers when they were sampled in Bahrain, with the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel preferring to stick to the current compounds.

    In the wake of that wave of criticism, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff urged F1 drivers to support Pirelli, saying the new compounds are necessary to cope with the downforce demands of the current crop of cars and avoid further failures.

    Ferrari director Mekies agreed with Wolff that teams shouldn't have to worry about whether the tyres will hold up, but explained the new compounds will cause them a headache to get right.

    "We know this tyre is done for better safety, the prototype tyre, so that's the way it is," Mekies said.

    "We all want safety, we all want to push as hard as we can without having to be concerned about the tyre safety and I think that's what Pirelli has done.

    "So yes, it comes with less grip, we don't like less grip, but if it's the price one has to pay to get it, then I'm sure it's fine.

    But they just got rid of 20% of the down force !?!?!? Shouldn't the old tires be able to put up with 2018 down force levels ?

    Friday was always my fav day at the track: barely any other visitors and you have more time to see the cars, wander the track and enjoy some of the newbies/backup drivers in the first session

    If they loose the extra time, they'll squeeze out the backup drivers and there is less action at the track. Stupid decision. Like that will save real $. They're already at the track with all the gear and people, now they just sit around.

    No but they, Mercedes were smart enough to devote 1 full GP test session to gaining knowledge on the new tire construction. They sacrificed some set up time to do this. Was reported not too long ago. Smart but they had no problem with this as titles were in-hand!

    Ferrari (and others) tried the new tires with redesigned floor to verify the aero interaction but nobody tested the tires as long as Merc. Add in Merc advantage in simulation and pretty sure they’ll start the season with an advantage. Like that’s a surprise, ha-ha.

    Doesn't mean they know what kind of tyre they want from Pirelli. Sorry, but don't trust them (hell, even Ross Brawn said he couldn't trust Toto!).

    Mercedes took the time to invest in an investigation. Ferrari certainly have the resources to do so, and were not competitive. To not do this with the opportunity is not sound.

    How 2022's Formula 1 tech arms race could impact 2021

    Formula 1's tech arms race will intensify on 1 January as teams can commence CFD and windtunnel work on their designs for the all-new 2022 regulations.



    Working on aero for the new era, which was postponed from 2021 due to the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, has been prohibited until now although teams have had sight of the regulations to plan ahead.

    Simulation work was restricted by the FIA to ensure teams with more resources weren't able to steal a march and further widen the disparity over those squads operating on tighter budgets.

    The 2021 season also marks the start of F1's new sliding scale system for aero development, with simulation time available to teams governed by championship position.

    As the 2020 manufacturer's champions, Mercedes will only be able to use 90% of the 100% reference - equivalent to 80 hours of windtunnel time, with 320 runs and tunnel occupancy at 400 hours.

    For each position lower, the percentage increases by an increment of 2.5%, with Williams able to use 112.5% for finishing tenth in 2020.

    This means Mercedes will have 72 hours, 288 runs and 360 hours of occupancy, whilst Williams will have 90 hours, 360 runs and 450 occupancy hours.

    The tilting scale grows to an even more significant number from 2022 onwards, with the lead constructor allowed just 70% of the agreed windtunnel time, while increments between each constructor double to 5%.

    In the knowledge that it will be impacted more heavily than its competitors by the impending changes, Mercedes has spent a large portion of this season concentrating its efforts on 2021 with a view to also starting work early on its 2022 car.



    The development of its record-breaking W11 receded after introducing a new front wing with a different flap configuration at the Tuscan Grand Prix in September, with Toto Wolff explaining at the Eifel Grand Prix that development had ceased "a long time ago".

    In that same period, Red Bull and Ferrari made a raft of changes to their cars aimed at reducing their deficit to Mercedes, culminating in Max Verstappen's victory in Abu Dhabi.

    Both teams also trialled components that will feature on their cars in 2021.

    Ferrari's changes included a rear wing endplate design similar to that seen on the W11 and altered positioning of the plough on its nose, impacting flow through the inlets it creates beside the nose tip.

    The Scuderia also added a series of arched flaps on top of the turning vane's footplates, made changes to the bargeboard and sidepod deflectors and trimmed its front wing upper flap.

    Meanwhile Red Bull introduced a new rear upright featuring a triangular opening that allows air to flow through.


    A small winglet was added on the outside of the halo's frame to adjust flow down over the sidepod and engine cover, while multiple changes were made to the RB16's front wing, with a single pillar rear wing appearing in Abu Dhabi.

    Its wastegate pipework was also reconfigured to a more conventional location in conjunction with changes to the centre of the diffuser.
