For such a popular iconic recognizable car, the poor thing is just the Rodney Dangerfield of the Ferrari community in so many ways. I'm done waiting for them to take off like the 250 GTE finally did when NO one said they ever would. Sure we have the glass cars and the occasional 2500 mile example 328 who enjoy the 6 figure life but why not the typical red tan 1983 GTS with 36,000 miles? Looks like 2015 threw them and the rest out of the car onto the street and drove away forever.
That's awesome! I had the pleasure of chatting with a FNA Technical Representative and was fascinated by the amount of tech I learned in ~ 20 minutes. It would be great if some of that could be put into a book. I felt more proud of the engineering and craftsmanship than ever when I drove away.
You make a great point. Valuable or not I just felt the iconic 308/328 deserved a dedicated bible style book since it's THE Ferrari so many grew up with and owned.
Dr Tommy, Of course they’ll get there....some day. I owned a relatively rare American muscle car for many years despite not being into muscle cars any longer (my first drive in a 308 at age 16 ruined me ). Despite that, I hung onto it because I “knew“ it would be valuable one day. When Enzo died, I was sure that would trigger the jump...and while it did for Euro cars, American muscle didn’t follow. I held-out for 5 or 6 more years, still waiting for the surge, and finally sold it for $6k in the mid-90’s (3x what I had paid for it approx 18 years earlier). Today it’s a $70k +/- car. And I’ve had similar experiences with other cars too... Just keep the Dino trajectory (or 250 GTE or air-cooled Porsche) in mind and remember two things: they’re not making any more 308s and you’ll never pay too much for one, you may just be slightly ahead of the curve. In the meantime, I love rolling down the road in a non-depreciating Ferrari and one of the most beautiful cars ever built.
Here’s an example of what a book on the 308-328 series might look like in terms of scope, etc. http://www.elferspot.com/en/shop/porsche-964-book-the-modern-classic It isn’t the totally comprehensive book that some would prefer but still satisfactory to a lot of enthusiasts. I would buy it. In fact, I might buy the Porsche book!
Carl, this year I bought a 208 and 308 GT4.... lovely cars... I also started a while ago to look into the topic... fascinating and even more complex than the V6 Dino....
When I was in high school it seemed like the 246 Dino was the only Ferrari I could ever hope to own. Well, it turned out not to be true but eventually it was the 308. Along the way I had a couple of Fiats and a whole bunch of Alfas. They were Americas best kept secret because I could get them for next to nothing and honestly, the whole point was to own and DRIVE them. It wasn't about prestige or impressing the neighbor. Same goes for the 308. I could afford it and it's a blast to drive. I like working on it, I'm proud to own it and I don't give a hoot what anyone else thinks about it.
great... any help appreaciated..... there are still many open questions and I will start posting a few of them over the next year on FChat... starting today with two strange pouches....
You know the world is upside down when Datsun 240Z's are getting over $100K...and a 308 has a hard time reaching $75K...
