    Hi everyone,
I have a need to update my up/over garage dor to a sectional door design to free up the additional width to make it easier to get my 458 in/out of the garage.

Can anyone recommend a brand and company/fitter in the UK, preferably South West please?

    Thanks in advance.

    - Rich.

When I was researching this a Hormann seemed the most promising to create width hormann.co.uk - then it wasn't needed but thats another story......

They have nominated local fitters with whom they will put you in touch to progress

I fitted roller doors, (Ali guard which is a bog standard door manufacturer) and if you need extra width, these can be run behind the opening so you loose a bit of depth but gain on width.

else go for swinging doors with hinges in the correct place to give width.

I used “up and over doors” from Bristol but wouldn’t recommend them.

(I never understood the uk up and over doors; mind boggling stupid design)

Totally agree, the UK Up/Over door design is about the most inefficient design for a garage that you could have.

Hormann make a decent door. Someone tried to break into one of mine with a hi-lift jack and it resisted fine.

Custom sizes are available and various fitting options to maximise access.

some apps and modules available to make your phone into a remote, which is much more convenient than separate remotes and cheaper than adding home-link to a car spec.

Thanks I think I will go with Hormann...who fitted yours please? I'm looking for a recommendation if possible though I realise I'm likely stuck with whoever is local.

They have expanded across the whole south of England since they did mine (6 years). Fit on ours was great but it always depends on the fitter on the day.

Strange question but was there a reason you were set on an up-and-over?
Asking as I changed my up-and-over double for a roller double earlier in the year to both increase the roof storage space and also improve access.
    I've never regretted the decision.

    Hi Derek,
No as stated above, I need to upgrade/replace the up/over with a sectional door design due to the up/over design restricting the width of the opening.
Are you UK based and if so, who fitted your roller please?

Richard, I'm in Melksham in Wiltshire, mine was done by a company called Rolling Door Concepts. (www.rdcuk.com)
They turn up and make the door to measure on-site.
I've nothing but positive things to say about them and their product.
If you're local to me you're welcome to pop round and take a look if you like.

I'm junking a 6m wide sectional for a roller for a number of reasons - cleaner interior install without rails, risk of a heavy door over the car and just an easier duty cycle.

While not particularly local to you, these guys show a good range of whats available:

Thank you Xbox and interesting that you are changing from a Sectional to a Roller. I thought Rollers were noisier and not so nice looking?

Would also be keen to know what you mean by easier duty cycle please?

Sure, IMO the stereotypical image of a roller door is from childhood days, where a newsagent would rattle up his steel rusty shutter :D

Todays doors are very quiet and smooth and with wider slats look perfectly acceptable in a residential setting. See attached - I have no problem with its look.

In terms of my easier duty cycle comment - a 6m wide sectional door weights an awful lot. I have 3x separate installations and while the slickest and best is super smooth, due to its side mounted axle motor, the worst has a centre pull arm and the whole frame shakes and judders during start/stop, with an awful lot of strain to get it moving.

Rollers don't suffer like this, since they all have integrated axle motors, with more even torque required to initiate and then actuate.

    I hope that explains!

    Hi
Yes that looks better than other versions I have seen and yes your analogy is spot on for me, the changing sound of a roller door being yanked up by a manual chain pull system.

Have you researched makes/models? Are you going for Limavady?

Yes, but their Magroll based product looks pretty comprehensive, also on my doorstep so to speak.

Some good info in what to look out for here https://d4products.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Magroll-95mm-Brochure.pdf

Yep, like I mentioned sectional can be very good and very bad, depending on the install.

Errors magnify as size and weight increase. I've also grown to dislike the Mechano-esk railing systems, which IMO visually lower the roof line somewhat.

Thats basically what I have, but not as wide. Once you get into the motor, controller, sensors and extrusions I don’t think there is much difference with a lot of companies using the same basic parts.

if you fit yourself, it’s not a one man job!
