On the topic of what causes this issue, I'm convinced it isn't just using unapproved car cleaning products. I was cleaning out my Texas attic and found an old Blackberry. Part of the back casing had gone sticky and felt just like a Ferrari sticky button. Cleaning products didn't cause this issue, Texas summers did! At least that's what I believe.

I just ran into a similar issue on a pair of Fiskars cutting shears - their rubber handles became sticky and I had to remove all the rubber coating. I'm not sure what caused the issue, but I have an identical pair down in the garage which are perfectly fine. It has to be some sort of chemical reaction that gets started and then goes down hill from there.

There was a thread about the reason behind it. Unfortunately I can't find it right now. But Graz is right - Dave demands perfection and his work shows his passion for the cars.

Here is my take on the sticky problem. I believe that the top coat on these plastic trim parts and buttons is a clear coating which has a no glare and soft transparent finish.

After a period of time, this clear transparent coating begins to degrade. It is not the fault of the owner at all. The coating then becomes sticky and opaque.

If one removes the degraded sticky film, the underlying plastic parts will be revealed as well as any icons or markings.
A number of cleaning products can be employed. F Chat members have suggested Neutrogena make up removing pads.
I’ve tried them and they do a brilliant job, I used them on the steering wheel our cover which also surround the ignition key area. I also cleaned the AUTO, REVERSE, and PS buttons on the center console. The white letter markings were preserved, and more legible after the cleaning.

cheers and thanks for taking the time to get back to me.

I agree it looks like a temporary film over the original piece. i will give the cleaning wipes a go and let you know how it turns out.

    thanks again.

30 hours of work? looooool....thats longer than it would take to drop the engine and reinstall it lol. I did my entire 360 Modena which had terrible sticky buttons with isopropyl alcohol in about 3-4 hours max and it was almost like new after...Modena is different kind of plastic though

I posted this on a similar thread.
I had a sticky button situation on my 2010 458.
While the problem didn't seem to be as serious as the photo above, after I cleaned the surface with alcohol and in some cases a little
Goo Gone, I used this flat varnish by brushing it on the buttons.
Even though the stickiness was gone after the first application, I applied 5 extra coatings.
No discoloration, fading or brush marks were present.
The varnish was available through Amazon and was priced very reasonably.
