Just paid my personal property tax bill for Loudoun County VA. $5350 a year in taxes because they use low retail value of "NADA Collectibles & Exotics". That puts the "fair" assessed value at ~$135K. Not even close for an F430 Spider F1 with 27K miles.

Has anyone in LoCo successfully fought this to get it changed?

    Short answer, no.

You can get a high mileage waiver for a lower value, but it has to be ridiculous miles.
At least you can right off property taxes, if there is a bright side.

I actually do plan to move out of the NoVA area in a couple years, still within reach of DC but not necessarily "the DC area". This is just another reason to move sooner rather than later.

    Ugh.

Same here. Immediately walked across the hall and got the appeal form. The max from appeal is only 10% which will still be over fair market for my Cali T.

What reason are you using to base your appeal? Which form? I looked online and the only reasons listed were excessive mileage or significantly poor condition.

Maybe if enough of us do it we can get a more equitable assessment method.

What I'd like to do is offer my car to the tax assessor for $125K, a full $10K below "fair market value". Theoretically he could flip the car and make $10K. Of course he won't because I'm sure he knows how inflated the assessed values are. BTW I bought my car for $85K back in Nov.

After twenty years in Fairfax County, wife and I moved west. Lost touch with the Outer Banks but got the mountains instead. It was an equitable trade.

Get an address in FL. Title, insure, and register the car here. There is no yearly or ad valorem tax here.

Picking a county that doesn't have emissions inspections makes life more pleasant.

This.....Madison Co. also does it. They dinged me one year when I had the wife’s car registered in VA. Now we have a place in FL.

We love VA, but it’s getting harder to live there.

VA is probably the worst state in the country when it comes to owning and driving nicer cars. They are overzealous in handing out tickets, sales tax is not credited on trades and of course recurring over valued property taxes on your cars. VA is not headed in the right direction these days unfortunately.

4% a year is insane. Come on over to MD. One time safety inspection at purchase, but none for 20yrs old if registered historic. For a lot of the counties in MD, there is no emissions testing EVER. I have my cars registered in Caroline county to avoid emissions inspection.

People's Republic of Maryland? Seems there'd be other trade-offs...

(although VA is heading the same way sorry to say)

Forgot about jail time for speeding above 80mph. Yes, it happens!

Enjoy your nice car in first gear on some of the finest Ferrari roads in the country.

I saw a Montana plate on a brand new Corvette yesterday which made me think of this thread. It sticks out like a flashing neon sign: "please stop me and give me a ticket". The worst part is the burden of proof required to show you aren't dodging taxes in Virginia by using Montana, Delaware or Florida is ridiculously high and you have to prove it is legit in Traffic Court where they have seen every scam possible.

My primary residence is in FL and I register my cars there. I can't imagine paying personal property tax on my cars in VA and getting nothing in return. It almost pays to have a second home elsewhere............

The second home ends up being free. Cant blame the libs though, these taxes have been in effect before they got there.

I get it. VA will end up like CA soon if it continues down this road. I'll be long gone by then though. Let the cockroaches that created the mess deal with it.
