I thought that everything from HF is/was for only temp use. ;)

    From Anthony's R&T link:

"The recall document says that the problem could affect more than 450,000 jack stands produced between 2013 and 2019. These jack stands were sold under the Pittsburg brand name, and can be identified by item numbers 56371 or 61196 on 3-ton models, and 61197 on 6-ton models."

Can anyone suggest some quality replacements? Preferably U.S. made?

This is what I use to preserve the pinch welds. They also have specific pads for cars that does not use pinch welds. Downsides are: 1) Cost and 2) Fixed height. But they work really well in protecting the car and very stable.

    I
also just took delivery of a Quickjack. I have been eyeing these for about 3 years and finally decided to go ahead with one.

Lincoln or Hein Werner used to be the top notch ones.

I’m a big fan of Harbor Freight. But never, ever buy anything your life depends on from there.

...and this is why you should purchase quality equipment, which is rarely offered by Harbor Fright.

These are fantastic suggestions! I’ve never understood why someone shops at HF in the first place, let alone trust their life to jacks or jack stands from that store.

HF has its place but I am selective on what I buy there.

What is the specific problem with the locking pawl? I have similar stands - Not from HF - and curious to know issue. Is it a defect in the shape of he pawl and how it engages the rack? They ones I have seem very robust.

You bring up a good point that I did not address earlier.
Just because it did not come from HF does not mean it may not have an issue. It is easy to bag on HF but perhaps the same thing is available at Sears etc...

I always have a second look at tools that I would trust my life to no matter where sourced.

Wow those are junk. Of all the things to skimp on a jack stand just isn't one of them.

Very interesting.....I had heard it was related to the car ON it moving, but the slop in the upright channel was terrible in those.

Mine are ancient and I don't know where they came from but that video is a great tutorial!!
