From Autosport observer watching different cars in a corner -

Of the rest, I saw a decent amount of the McLaren, Racing Point and Haas. I would put McLaren marginally ahead of Racing Point based on what I saw. Lance Stroll was chasing Lando Norris around for several laps and Norris gradually edged away. He was able to carry a bit more speed into Turn 7 without the car biting him, whereas Stroll had a massive rear slide while trying to re-apply power mid-corner on one lap so had to rein it in thereafter.

"The McLaren looks Red Bull-esque in terms of balance but without the same level of overall grip. The Racing Point clearly inspires confidence on entry, but can't quite hold on to the same degree as the McLaren mid-corner."

07:36 "I spent the best part of an hour in the early stages of Wednesday's afternoon session watching trackside at the high-speed esses of Turns 7 and 8.

"Obviously this is only a brief snapshot, and it's difficult to compare like for like based on differing test programmes between teams, but nevertheless here are my first impressions of F1 2020, close-up.

"The Red Bull-Honda was arguably the standout car. Max Verstappen was braking insanely late for this section, noticeably later even than Valtteri Bottas in the Mercedes, and could pick up the throttle earlier than anyone else at the apex of 7. The most impressive thing was the car seemingly gave Max absolutely no trouble, lap after lap it looked like it was on rails. However, it also looked as though it was arriving at reduced speed compared to the other top cars, so perhaps is running in a detuned state engine-wise for now, which would also help explain why he was so late on the brakes and early back on the throttle."

    Ben Anderson

"I feel the Ferrari is slightly behind the other two at this stage. The car looks decent enough on entry but then appears to lose grip mid-corner. I've heard there was a concern last week from Sebastian Vettel about the Ferrari having too much understeer and that tallies with my visual impression. Leclerc was having to use much more of the road on the exit of 7, thus tightening his approach to 8, because the car just would not fully comply as he re-applied the power mid-corner."Ben Anderson

07:36 "The Mercedes looked predictably impressive, not quite as obviously painted to the road as the RB16 but still very strong. It looked ever so slightly lazy mid-corner, but was most likely running fat with fuel. Certainly there is a feeling elsewhere in the paddock that the W11 is still the car to beat, and it's hard to argue with that based on last week's lap times, even if I didn't seen the best of it today."

Unless Ferrari has something in store for Leclerc they haven't shown yet, it looks like Max will be the challenger this year.

Ferrari doesn't look good, but the red bull looks pretty decent, If he's within 2 tenths of the Merc, and reliability is good, Crapilton won't stand a chance against Max...

Williams has already been forced to move onto its third Formula 1 engine of pre-season testing after issues with the Mercedes power unit.

A year on from a disastrous start to 2019 testing after car build delays, Williams enjoyed a solid first week of running at Barcelona - though its 2020 FW43 did stop last Friday.

The team suffered another setback on Wednesday morning when an oil system issue forced Nicholas Latifi to stop on-track, causing a red flag.

Speaking on Wednesday afternoon following Latifi's issue, deputy team principal Claire Williams expressed her frustration over the recurring engine problems that had limited running.

"We had some engine problems which have been a little frustrating," said Williams.

"We're on our third engine issue now, which has obviously cost us quite a lot of track time, which is unfortunate.

"I suppose it is what can happen in testing, and at least it's not our issue that something has gone wrong with the car.

"Apart from that, it's gone well. We're covering the run programme as we can with the limited mileage that we've got.

"I would be happier if we had some more miles under our belt I suppose."

Williams confirmed the problems were being investigated by Mercedes, the team's power unit supplier.

"There were some other issues last week," she added.

"The one on Friday, [Mercedes is] still investigating, so you should talk to them about that.

"I don't think that they've found the problem. I think there was an issue with the MGU-H on the Thursday night one.

"There was a sensor issue on Friday morning that obviously was our issue. That put us off the track for probably half an hour, something like that.

"That's the only issue that we've had."

A Mercedes spokesman told Autosport: "The issue that Williams encountered today is different to the one they experienced last week.

"The first assessment points towards an oil pressure issue.

"The PU is now back on its way to Brixworth [Mercedes' engine base] where we will have the chance to take a more thorough look at it."

Williams was able to get back out on track for the afternoon session on Wednesday following the engine issue, with George Russell taking over from Latifi.

Ferrari will start the season behind rivals Mercedes, team boss Mattia Binotto said as Formula 1's final pre-season test started in Spain.

"We believe we are not the fastest car at the moment and we believe in lap times we will behind at the start of the season," Binotto said on Wednesday.

Binotto said Mercedes had so far been "very impressive", adding: "They remain the best team so far."

The fastest time on Wednesday was set by Alfa Romeo reserve Robert Kubica.

Headline lap times in pre-season testing are notoriously unreliable indicators of actual form as it is impossible to know the specifications in which teams are running their cars and variables such as fuel loads and engine mapping can make significant differences to speed.

Mercedes finished the first day of the three-day test seventh fastest with Lewis Hamilton.

Binotto said he had been impressed by the ease with which Mercedes had achieved their lap times in last week's first test and said Ferrari had work to do to catch up.

"We know exactly where we want to go and what are our objectives," he said. "We are very focused. Winter testing may not show the right level of performance and it is very early days to judge. The season is very long."

Binotto said Ferrari had succeeded in creating more downforce from this year's car, after a lack of aerodynamic grip was a weakness last season, but that the car still had a weakness in slow-speed corners.

"The car of this season is faster in the corners and slower on the straights, which was an objective when we designed this car" he said.

"Last season we were too slow in the corners so we tried to put as much downforce as we could in the car to be as fast as possible in the corners, but now we are paying off a bit on the straights.

"And in terms of overall balance, in slow-speed corners there is something we need to improve."

Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel added: "We would like to be in a stronger position now but the season is very long. The car is a step forward and we know we can improve it so time will tell."

That's one breakdown for Red Bull, one for Ferrari so far - and none for Mercedes
Vettel and Red Bull's Max Verstappen both had spins without damaging their cars, Vettel at Turn Eight in the morning session and Verstappen at Turn 10 late in the afternoon.

Elsewhere, the new Racing Point continued to attract attention from other teams because of its pace - Sergio Perez was third fastest, just behind the Red Bull of Max Verstappen, both on the medium tyre - and its likeness to last year's Mercedes.

The team have admitted they have copied last year's Mercedes car, saying that they believed they needed to change their approach because their previous design was not showing sufficient capacity for development.

But Renault executive director Marcin Budkowski said he believed they approach was "a slightly concerning evolution for the sport".

He added: "It's a trend that started a few seasons ago and it is a new chapter in that trend.

"It will be for the FIA to decide whether it's fully compliant or not.

If what Binotto says is true, then at least they "understand the car" this season. That alone is a huge improvement over the train wreck that was last year's Australian Grand Prix. Fingers crossed for Max to make a Mercedes sandwich going into the first turn.

I think all teams have a 'level' of understanding but with less test time there will be a small gap in total picture possibly.

The only one fighting with Mercedes in Australia will be Red Bull. Ferrari will be fighting with Racing Point and McLaren for 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Saying that it is "a long season" is just another way of saying "we are far far behind." It seems that Ferrari went for mild evolution from last year (maybe to save money for the big changes in 2021), while Mercedes took the full monty approach and came out with a lot of new innovation. Sort of like blowing it all on this year and one more championship and then packing it in, and not wasting money on the diminishing returns on investment of F1 beginning in 2021. The only surprise in this second test session is Kubica in the Alfa. How did that happen...was everyone else in third gear?
