IMO, front-end design has become problematic in the last decade for many brands
There are many factors at play including cooling, PedPro, crash worthiness etc., etc.
Having said that , the gaping maws on some of today's cars mystify me.
In an effort to retain and establish Brand Character and 'Down the Road Graphics', some companies have lost the plot
One of the things I try to instill in student designers is the importance of establishing a 'Face' that one can identify a block away and telegraphs the Brand.
Historically, Rolls, BMW, Mercedes, Jeep, Ferrari, Lambo, Maserati, Alfa, Bugatti, Bently, Aston, Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login etc. have understood this without question. Even Kia has established a unique look for their 'Face'

lately however, I'm not sure what's going on out there

    John,

Something I would add to your efforts to instill the importance of a recognizable face - the face has to be cohesive with the rest of the design. Some of the Mazdas strike me as having been designed then someone made a management decision that the corporate face had to be grafted on even if it really didn't work.

You must have read my mind. Tomorrow’s lecture is about the importance of a ‘face’ and the importance of brand character.
Unfortunately many students are clueless regarding design continuity. BMW was a master of this, but lately even they may be losing the plot. Rolls, Volvo, Jeep and yes even Lexus are great of developing and nurturing their visual brand design characteristics.
The danger with all designers is the dreaded: ‘ I didn’t do it, so it can’t be any good’ syndrome.
Trying to convince designers that Cadillac OWNS vertical taillights can be frustrating. Even the latest Cadillac showcar introduced horizontal elements in the taillight execution.
To see BMW walking away from their twin-port grilles, and adopting a Kia face has me scratching my head.

    How about the interior?
Personally, I never really understood the idea of central seating. Having to crawl over a gigantic sill doesn’t really excite me.
But it does negate the need for right hand drive & left hand drive ;)

What, having a giant computer screen on the center-stack doesn’t do it for you?
    Talk about distracted driving.........

Try tapping the correct spot of a Tesla 3 tablet console to control the radio, temp, nav, etc. while driving. It's ridiculous. Some of the button text looks barely 8pt. Maybe after hours and hours you could do it without staring at the screen.

John do you like the Stelvio's console screen? I think one of the smart things about it, like Audi, is that it's set to a black background with minimal frills - it's clean and crisp but not too bright or distracting.
