Such an awesome project, thanks for taking us along the journey. I threw together some of the photos into a relatively short video slideshow. Hope it serves as a good summary of your hard work. If nothing else, it's a trip down memory lane. :)

How long did it take to do the FULL restoration on this vehicle?
According to this thread, 3.5 years?

    Good day Armen,

You may wish to qualify your question, as there is the elapsed time and working time.... 3.5 Years is the elapsed time from when Paul started the thread, however, he might not have been working on it non-stop... and there might have been time where the car was waiting for things (waiting for parts, paint shop, etc). Thus the actual working time may be somewhat less .

    Cheers,

    Sam

As Sam said, it wasn't that long at a constant pace and for many reasons. Locating parts, relying on outsourcing like interior and paint, other jobs Im working on at the same time. That time could be greatly reduced if it was the only focus and monthly budget isn't a factor.

The car will be up for sale if anyone is interested. Not sure if it will go to Cavallino to be judged prior to a sale but getting an official document would only help. If it goes to Cavallino Ill be there representing it.

    Quick and maybe stupid question:

On concours level restorations such as this, is the paint single stage (like original) or base/clear? Im curious if judges give demerits based on the use of modern paint with clear coat in these ground up cases.

What about in the case of a partial respray? Is a single stage respray if a fender a “better” repair than base/clear?

You get dinged if the paint is too nice but base clear although wrong doesn't cost you points. Too perfect Im told will get you some deduction but in this case we went single stage and maintained a certain level of orange peel. If someone wanted it nicer then it can be polished smooth but since we can't put orange peel back as easy as removing it, we stopped short of perfect. Its still nicer than original though.

Paul, beautiful job. What market car is this with the yellow lights, hexagonal spinners, and no windshield wipers (hint hint). Did it sell?

I was thinking about you today actually. Need to send you a few items.

The 84 was a French market car originally and still had the yellow flash to pass lights and octagon nuts but both were showing their age. I added the yellow headlights to make it correct which is the same as my 400i which fortunately still had its original yellow lamps. See pasted blurb below.

WHY DID FRANCE HAVE YELLOW HEADLIGHTS ? ... This tradition started during World War II so that the French civilian cars would stand out from enemy vehicles. The Government enacted a law on the 3rd of November, 1936 stating that all vehicles put into production in 1937 are required to have yellow headlights.

And when you drive a car at night with yellow headlights you'll wonder why all cars dont have them. My 400i is amazing at night on the wooded country roads up here. I recently found out its legal up here to have them.

Not so much anymore. It was an over restoration deduction and the judges have been reined in on using it. The over restoration deduction is supposed to be applied for the overall car. Not one single aspect of it. That was always the intention but over time it got applied incorrectly.

There are a lot of groups judging cars so there is no single correct answer in how they will do it. The IAC/PFA judging guidelines are used by a number of organizations and people are incorrectly led to believe they are used in even more. They are used at Cavallino Classic and FCA national events. We do not care a great deal about paint. It needs to resemble a Ferrari color. If it is obviously a non standard color you need documentation it was built that way....some were. We recognize Ferrari paint covered the spectrum from really bad to Paris show car perfect. We also recognize laws regulating what can be used vary over time and geography. We would not be impressed favorably if a Boxer had perfect paint but nothing would be done about it. Likewise we also would not care if it was single or 2 stage. Perfect paint would not prevent a Platinum award but it may prevent a special award because judge impression beyond scorable items come into play.

The black 750 Monza Bob Smith just restored purposely had just pretty good paint. Race cars were that way, or worse. Also all the sponsor painting on it was hand done with a brush. If it was built for royalty, a very special client or to be a factory show car the paint quality would be a very different thing.

As I said prior different organizations do things differently but the IAC/PFA (International Advisory Committee for the Preservation of the Ferrari Automobile) that Cavallino Classic and the FCA national program use is very different than most. We care about two things really. Keeping your Ferrari looking like a Ferrari and using your Ferrari. We do not deduct for things that would prevent you from driving the car. Worn leather, rock chips, dirt in the fender wells??? Who cares? Consumable items like tires batteries etc are not judged. They just need to be correct for the car. We really prefer originality and try hard not to give you reason the replace original, usable items. We have even discussed having a rally of some distance and then impounding the cars until the show so we can see them after a good trip and get people over the idea of trying to make them look perfect.

Its called an edge clip and found at any electrical supply company. You might end up with 99 extras though.
