DSC talk about a Ferrari-engined DPi concept funded by the money man behind a major European-based Ferrari GT customer team. I think of AF Corse and SMP Racing that are connected to each other. SMP have a Dallara LMP2 Program now and have a project of a Dallara LMP1. A Dallara with Ferrari engine sound logic after the rumors of DPI in Le Mans. The new WEC calendar including Sebring 2019 can confirm some type of agreement between IMSA and ACO. The problem is the V8 3.9 Turbo and the V12 6.2 or 6.5 are out of IMSA DPI rules, but I think an exception can be made. With common platform for DPI/LMP1 for 2020 I have the sensation like a Dallara with FXXK engine could be possible. This would be like having a new generation of 333 SP. ACO Open to Common DPi/LMP1 Platform for New 2020 Regs - Sportscar365
Ferrari will never put their engine in a non Ferrari badged car. You can only buy a car from a dealer, take the engine out and put in your car. Like P4/5C I spoke with an important manager from Ferrari and his answer was: we focus on GT racing GTE and GT3
Ferrari won't support it, but it has been done before. You can buy a GTE or GT3 crate engine from one of the Italian tuning firms like Michelotto. People have also put different engine in Ferraris, like a Chevy V8 in a 308GTB, or a V10 Judd in a 333SP, called Doran.
Precisely the rumor of DSC confirms his words, talk about a Ferrari-engined DPi concept funded by the money man behind a major European-based Ferrari GT customer team. But considering that there is a plan of cost reduction in F1 engines since 2021 and with the possibility of competing in Le Mans low cost with a DPI platform I believes it is a good opportunity, like in the 90's with the fall of C Group cars and the arrival of the 333 SP with Dallara chassis and F50 engine. Do you not forget the great story of Ferrari with Le Mans, now it is still the third most winning mark with its 9 victories.
Well...not exactly. Ferrari had its engine in the Lancia LC2's in the 80's ( badged as a Ferrari), they had their Indy engine in Alfa Romeo Indy cars, and then there were a number of privateer MOMO Racing to be exact that had 308/328 engines built by Michellotto sanctioned by Ferrari in the 80's....
Amazing. You j-u-s-t beat me to it. As I looked at the thread listing and re-noticed this one, I thought of the IMSA car. An Alba, was it not? Another search mission for me. I'm pretty sure tho'.... edit: hell yeah there's some memory cells left ...I see a Spice also. More search.'Don't recollect offhand but maybe a little jogging... I was talking (but did not wrote) in modern days Ferrari SpA will not put a "works" engine in a Dallara, never. You really need to talk to management people at Corse Clienti / GT department
"Never" doesn't exist at Ferrari. Ferrari would never be rear-engine. Ferrari would never be anything than V12 Ferrari would never be turbo Ferrari would never be FWD Ferrari would never be SUV ... the last one is very much talked about recently.
Ferrari engine on the Lancia Stratos, on the Lancia Thema. Ferrari engine in the Dallarra chassis named Ferrari 333SP. Ferrari engines on F1 Martini, F1 Sauber, F1 Prost, F1 Toro Rosso, F1 Manor, F1 Haas, etc ...
I understand the position of the Corse Clienti department, but I see the DPI with the potential of what was the 333 SP for the company, with around 50 international victories, winning in 3 times the 12 hours of Sebring, the 24 hours of Daytona, the first Petit Le Mans and a class Victory in Le Mans. The ACO want to equalize NA with turbos engines, and level all hybrid classes, and of course a common LMP1 and DPI platform. I think the V12 of the FXXK with the hybrid system in a Dallara chassis would be fantastic, would be like re-creating a 333 SP from now. we just need a Gianpiero Moretti who convinces the factory to build the car.
The problem is that I don´t see Ferrari setting a works team in DPi, or whatever they finally do. The 333 SP was built to sell to customers, and Ferrari only took the project seriously when they realized they could make money from it. But a privateer Ferrari wouldn´t be a match against factory backed teams.
The 333SP was mainly an out sourced project anyway. DPI might allow another project like the 333SP, but Ferrari would have to put it's name on the chassis again.
I'd be willing to bet that Mssr. Penske might think otherwise. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Never? The Haas f1 car is a Dallara chassis with a works f1 Ferrari engine, full stop, ran a race last weekend and tested this week and will be running next year in f1. The relationship is already there if the 2021 rules potentially simplifying the f1 engine makie it workable in prototypes.
No, it did not. It did outqualify the other 512s and when it finished, it was ahead of the other 512s. Actually I just wanted to use the excuse to post the pics. It sho' was perty.
There were numerous Ferrari-engined cars during the IMSA GTP era running in the Camel Lights class as mentioned with Alba and Spice chassis. Rob Dyson's team also ran a Ferrari 348 engined Spice with chopped top in the WSC category with beautiful yellow Rain-X livery in 1994 before Ferrari came along with the 333-SP. I remember at the time Rob was bemoaning the chassis which was among the last produced by Spice and the engine was underpowered by light comparatively speaking. They actually led at the 24 Hours of Daytona for a time before an oil leak IIRC. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login BHW
Well, the other 512s were privateers too, so it doesn´t matter anyway. Can´t argue about the looks though.
Aaahhh-ha. We both forgot Sebring, '71. Mark and David finished 6th in the 512 while the Ferrari PB broke (Mario and Jacky). I would never bet against a Penske prepared (same) car against a Ferrari prepped one either.
C'mon yourself. At what, 3/4 the weight and I'd bet 1/3 less frontal area...? Excuses, excuses....a dime a dozen. Seriously, like I said, I would never bet against Penske preparing the exact same car as Ferrari, or anybody for that matter.... (well, a Joest Audi maybe.... )
