I think Alonso secretly works for Toyota.

All the negativity for Alonso is ridiculous. Like him or not, his performance today was fantastic. He's definitely going to cement himself in history as one of the greatest drivers. He worked with his team and drove fantastic. He was working his way back to the front and he could've finished top 3 if not for the boom.

Regarding Honda and the blow-ups: They were down on power to the Chevrolets. They had to take a chance. They pushed things to the limit. They took the risk and they won. If you win, it's worth it. Period.

Would love to hear an in-depth comparison from Alonso between contemporary F1 and Indycars, now that he has experienced both. Power, delivery characteristics, braking, handling, electronics, cornering, etc. Would be fascinating, as he is one of the few to experience both cars in a single season.

I guess I was thinking of Graham Hill. What about Jim Clark? Didn't he run Indy too? Don't even know if they ran both in the same year.

A lot of F1 drivers have driven at Indy; along with all those mentioned above: Jack Brabham, Jackie Stewart, Jochen Rindt and Peter Revson all took time out from F1 to drive Indy (back when there was no conflict). Mario Andretti did both in the same year, and Nigel Mansell did Indy immediately after retiring from F1. Takuma Sato skipped a year after leaving F1 before starting in Indycars.

But because of the current schedule conflict, Alonso is the first to have done both in the same year in a long time.

Just watched Alonso's speech for Best Rookie award at the INDYCAR banquet. Very humble words, very gracious and humorous too. You could tell he really enjoyed it, and wants to give it another go. For all the bad reviews he gets as being "toxic" to teams he drives for, he could not have been more of a class act during his Indy 500 debut. Awesome job,
    Fernando.

Jimmy ran from '63-'67 (was s'posed to drive a Lotus/Pratt Whitney in '68 but...). He won 'in '65.

Graham '66-68; he did drive a turbine in '68 and practiced in '69 teamed with Mario in the new Lotus 64s. They were the fastest in practice, but when it was discovered that the hubs were faulty (causing Mario's practice crash) and could not be replaced in time, he didn't. (Mario went on to win in his backup Hawk).

Dan ran '62-70. He was instrumental in getting Lotus to come to Indy and was Jimmy's Lotus teammate for the 500 '63-'65; 'drove his own Eagles '66-'70 (retired from driving at the end of '70) Dan's best was a consistent 2nd, 2nd, and 3rd, '68-'70.

Thanks for stirring up fond memories. :)

    Alonso has humor AND class.

Hamilton is a great driver. Think he could have pulled off a speech that classy?

Graham won in 1966 as a rookie. Was he also Rookie of the Year?
