After seeing several threads about F1 to MT conversions on other models and the topic of the 599 coming up more and more often, I wanted to capture the thread title before I lost it.

We have been looking for the right candidate for this project for some time now. So when a Rosso Corsa / Beige 599 came through at the right price we jumped on it!

So as to establish a time line, this project officially started 9/6/2016

Prior to starting the adventure, we did some pre-research on parts availability, various compatibility concerns, and secured the time to complete the process.

As of 1/18/2017 we are what I feel to be more than half way through!

I will do my best to post photographs taken along the way, answer the questions as they are asked, as well as update on any sticking points we come across.

This has proven to be quite a task , easier than expected in many ways, but more difficult in other ways, and a few unexpected hurdles.

First Day.. Car secured on lift - Check!

Now for the second most asked for item, the parts list.

This parts list is complete as of 1/18/2017 , it is NOT meant to be an all inclusive list, the part numbers are as copied from the current invoice. Part description are as listed.
I did not include pricing as we all know a guy who can get it for less .... if he can get it at all... ( enter smiley face here ) not to mention pricing changes over time.

Would be interesting to do this to a GTO. Keep all parts of both and you can always revert back. IMO the ''kit'' should hold it's value on it's own.

That said, SF/2 gearbox in the GTO is absolutely fantastic and IMO a great balance between emotion and performance. DCT gearboxes I find to lack emotion somewhat (though on a Speciale/F12/LaF/FF I'd only ever have DCT regardless of what was available), and especially the earlier boxes (pre-F430) too slow.

Steve- I see a bunch of clutch parts in there, but I think all you really need to do is change the seals on the T/O bearing to match brake fluid instead of F1 fluid. The clutch and T/O bearing are otherwise identical except for a few connectors/plugs. Just talking about the clutch itself, not the third pedal, master cylinder, etc., which obviously have to be added.

    Are you converting a 7.1.1 or 7.3.2 599?

I know that we are replacing many pieces, hardware, etc with new OEM so as to not have to come back out because XYZ piece failed shortly after the first drive... spending a little more now to make it right the first time around.

You are correct though, not everything has to be replaced, that may be left up to the individual.

    This car is a 7.1.1

I looked through the list a few times, looking for ECUs, but don't see them listed. Does that mean you have someone capable of reflashing the F1 ECUs to manual? Or, maybe I am just blind, they are listed, and my eyes just failed me...?

Right now, we have a route that leans towards changing the program in what we have.

Affirmative, a reflash would be a real boon to others who want to do the conversions.

    Interesting.

Would you guestimate that cost and complexity of converting a non-OTO/pre-2008 (if that makes a difference) 612 from F1 to manual is similar?

A 612 conversion should be much cheaper - closer to 575 conversion, I hope.

Clutch Pedal ( Sample ) that we had secured BEFORE starting the project only to find out after the fact that none would be made available at this time.

Plan B , we found a shop that would 3D scan it, then take the scan and be able to recreate the pedal out of a block of aluminum. Yes, it took a 5 axis cnc machine to do this... as you can see from the photo's, it's ALOT more complicated than it looks. PLUS, add in the nylon pivot block... it's worth every penny we paid to have it created!

Same for the shifter rod, we were able to put our hands on a total of 3 new pieces. We are considering having it replicated, 3D scanned at least, to have it as back up if/when needed in the future.

As others have said, I would expect it would be less expensive than a 599.

Parts availability being the main factor IMO.

The $50K parts price is starting to sound like a bargain.

Have you thought of using an off the shelf aftermarket shifter arrangement? given the rarity of the Ferrari components, or maybe one from an earlier Ferrari model that is more readily available?

In keeping with the OEM nature of the conversion, we have not considered aftermarket at this time.

Since we have OEM 599 parts available, no need to go to another model just yet.

THOUGH, we have found that some parts DO cross over between a 612 to the 599. Not that those parts were available either, but it did broaden the pool for future conversion parts.
