I hope these pics help for those who requested them. I texted a buddy of mine who is a professional photographer, but he hasn't called me back, so I just sent one of my employees to take 'em. Best Mike
Your photos show the 17" wheels from the '96-'98 models. Do you have the factory OEM 18" polished wheels that originally came with the '99? Are the stripes factory or aftermarket? Has the nose been resprayed?
1) The only thing that I have not pictured there is a red booklet, a remote fob, and the key. I was under the impression that these are factory (correct) wheels, but I don't know. 2) I assume that the stripes are factory- won't the VIN indicate whether or not that is the case ? If not and you can walk me through how to tell, I'll check for you. 3) Don't know if the nose was resprayed. The place where the car is being stored is owned by a guy who has a HUGE detailing business, and a collision repair business as well- I'll ask him for his opinion. ...and just to pre-emptively address the inevitable history questions- I bought the car a few months back. I own half of 7 pawnshops and the car's owner had come into one of my shops to sell a bunch of gold. He mentioned the car, one thing led to another, and the next day I was at his house to do the deal. I am not keeping the car because at 6'5", I don't fit comfortably in it. I had an acquaintance in the area who was able to pick the car up the next day to get it inspected for me. I went with a friend (who drove the car back to my house for me) to pick it up and bring it home. My brother's Father in Law is some kind of manager at the local Dodge dealership, so I gave them the car and told them to address anything that needed addressing. To my knowledge, everything that the car needs to have addressed has been done; any seriously interested parties are welcome to both talk to the Dodge tech/shop foreman and have a qualified mechanic of their choosing go over the car as they see fit. I am not trying to be evasive, but I cannot really honestly answer questions regarding the history of the car, since I don't know anything about it; all I knew is that I was buying the car right (and that in the worst case scenario I'd be stuck with putting it in my game room, which I still think would look pretty badass)- which is all I really needed to know. In short, if its not in the pictures or the Carfax, I probably don't know the answer- save driving past the detail shop at 45 mph where I caught a brief glimpse of it outside, I haven't even seen the car since it got detailed. Best Mike
The wheels are factory Viper wheels, they are just from the '96-'98 model year cars rather than '99. The reason I asked regarding the stripes and/or nose respray is that factory stripes go all the way to the vertical lip under the nose and the first photo in your post "more part 2" show them stopping short of that. If I had to guess based on the other photos you have provided I would venture to say they are factory stripes but that the nose has been resprayed at some point and they were simply masked off differently at that location.
Ok- I'm sorry that I can't be of more help here; you seem to be much better informed than I am on the car, so I'm happy to defer to you on it. Won't the VIN indicate whether or not they're factory ?
You'd have to run it through a VIN decoder and get a comprehensive report. There isn't a specific VIN digit that corresponds to whether or not the car came with OEM stripes.
Follow this link re VIN decoder: 1B3ER69E3XV503954 Dodge Viper / RAM pickup heavy duty 4x2 1999 - VinDecoderz.com is a free VIN number lookup and vehicle history report provider Vin wouldn't tell us about stripes... viper owners can request a reproduction build sheet from SRT Dodge, that will tell anyone all about the car. As for production numbers, this is what I came up with: '99: 247 of 699 Coupes had Stripes. 128 Coupes with Cognac Connolly Leather interior: 3 Red (late release), 22 Silver, 77 Black, 26 Black with Silver Stripes So, 699 total GTS, 128 with Cognac, and then 26 Black/Cognac with Silver stripes were made, quite limited Good eye about the paint mark off, it could be the underside was repainted due to scuffing and that is where, like you said, the painter goofed by masking off at that point and not having a good eye for details and redoing the stripes. The stripes from factory were hand painated and have an edge that you can feel with finger tips but under the clear coat, so they'd never be scuffed off by polishers or waxing. About a year ago, I missed on an opportunity to buy a 2001 Saphire Blue GTS with Cognac and Silver stripes... quite a unique beast. Personally, I like this combo.
matt, i believe the stripes should go to the vertical lip, but not on the vertical lip. thats how I remember my original 96 gts to be. ed
Only in regards to that particular year's stripes going through the rear recess for the license plate - '96 was the only year to have the stripes go completely through that area.
But what about the bottom side of the bumper and where the stripes start and stop? Are you familiar with the differences?
If anyone has a 2003 - 2005 GT or TDF 360 spider (sans-shields) I'd consider trading this towards it as well.
