With all the conversation of what is the best and each model having their high and low sides.... If you were talking to a stranger with no budget,(That has never owned a FCar) what would you recommend as the best 'starter' Ferrari????

I would say F1 F430. Easy to drive, low maintenance cost, affordable, with decent resale value.

    What say you?

If they had no budget like you say, I wouldn't recommend any. Warn them of potential $10K plus repairs on any model, go in with eyes open. Not an investment, a cash flow using toy. If still interested, direct them to f-chat- it's not a 1 min conversation unfortunately :)

When you say "no budget" do you mean no budget limitation?

I would say the Dino for sale in California. It is in excellent condition and drives great.
Your budget better be north of $300,000 though.
If your interest I can check to see it is still for sale.

The 328 is still the best starter Ferrari. In my opinion, it is the easiest of all Ferraris to own, gives the complete Ferrari experience, and is still the best introduction to Ferrari ownership.

I think a gated 360. Still feels raw and "old school" but with the benefits of improved engineering over vintage stuff and obviously much better in terms of reliability and maintenance cost. Not to mention such a great deal right now..SO much car for the money! Every time I drive my car I find something new I like about it. I really believe it's the perfect generation of Ferrari for the first time owner (like me).

I'd say a red 360 coupe. No doubt it looks like a Ferrari, goes like a a Ferrari, but doesn't cost like a Ferrari.

360 isn't raw or old school. In v8 line , raw old school ended with 348'. Which is good starting point .

An 01 or newer 360 Spider... gated.

An F1 depending on years of driving experience.

The answer depends on what you are coming from - if its faster than the Ferrari you had in mind then I would advise a revision of your choice. I went into an F430 and after changing the headers for aftermarket I found it perfectly quick enough for street use.

Great design, drives like a dream, dct driveline and a good step up in interior quality compared to previous years. Maintenance is easier than the prior year cars as well it would seem.

    No doubt.

That's actually why I picked the 360. It's powerband and lower hp make it that you have to try to get yourself into trouble rather than just end up there in a half second.

But sooo much more initial costs that trivialize the handful of belt jobs over its lifetime.

    This is true.

I wonder how many 360/f430 owners have owned F cars from other eras. I have had a Daytona, 308 GTB, 328 GTB, F40 (still own), 348 Challenge, 355 Berlinetta, 550 Maranello, 360 Modena manual trans (still own), and F430 (still own) and some of what's been mentioned in this thread run counter to my opinions based on my ownership experience. For someone's first Ferrari experience, there are definitely cars that would make for bad experiences for the novice.

The best first Ferrari is the same as the best Ferrari. You should always pay up for a known car. This is car that has been always serviced by a dealer, or, even better, one of the few really good independents out there. Miles don't matter. Options don't matter. F355 v F360 v F430 doesn't matter. All that counts is if the car has been well maintained and known issues have been addressed. The idea of buying an unknown Ferrari gives me a headache.

I will add a little levity to this thread.......

Best Ferrari is the same as "what is the best boat".........

And that my friends is the age old answer of: Your best friends boat ! (Insert : Ferrari)

The best Ferrari is your first Ferrari, regardless of the model. It will provide a magic that no other car, not even another Ferrari, can replicate.

As to which one to make your first, I don't think you can go wrong. I used to think that I would buy a lower-cost Ferrari, like a 308, as a "starter" Ferrari and slowly climb up the ranks to a more modern, more expensive, faster Ferrari. Turned out I first got a scud, and later got a 308. No regrets.

Just buy the Ferrari you like the most that you also can afford.
