Absolutely correct. Prices for the best and rarest are still strong, the rest not so much.....

    Lot 101 -- 1952 Allard K2 Roadster -- hammer $125,000
    Lot 102 -- MBZ 190SL -- scratched
    Lot 103 -- 1988 Ferrari 328 GTS -- hammer at $90,000
    Lot 104 -- 1999 Lamborghini Diablo Roadster -- hammer at $275,000

I was in the room. Not a strong showing except for a couple of the big cars. Either the estimates were off, these were subpar examples, or the market has weakened. I miss Max also. They did move quickly through most of the cars when they realized there were few to no bidders left.

It looks like the market is correcting itself. The high demand rare stuff is still commanding strong money and the rest is correcting.

I guess the laws of supply and demand have taken over.

I watched/monitored a good bit of Mecum online. As I commented early yesterday, the no-sale rate seemed extraordinarily high. Unsure if it was the quality of the cars, reserves set way too high, or getting the right buyers there while Quail was going on simultaneously.

The $190K 328 was a 2,000mile car, one owner, fully preserved and full stack of records. A bit of a unicorn for sure, someone really wanted it.

I'm a fan, not a market analyst, but having attended all these auctions at Monterey last year as well, seems like the top cars are ok, the lower end is solid but not where the sellers or houses had hoped. I'm going to imagine a lot of more realistic deal making occurred on the lawn at Mecum afterward

I looked at some of the lots by pictures only, and I thought they were not so great. I imagine they were worse in-person. The one car I did like was the Dianna Ross E-Type, it looked great. If prices have not pulled back 20% I would be shocked.

I would imagine the better part of the lot is tonight. Still don't see anything which I have said, I would have paid more for that car.

Dear Timmy, what a fantastic initiative! Not only the real numbers almost real-time, but also the no-sales with highest bid, and then all your friends' comments! This is a really good thread and provides fantastic insight.
I have bought some cars at auction recently, at Bonhams the Asa in Paris in feb, and in june London the Alfa 2600sz. I have in the past bought at Coys and RM. No need to bother with the mass houses, at least not for me.
I have also seen a softening all round, except maybe very special expensive stuff. This is quite normal, markets do go up and down. As to the prices in the catalogs, they are currently all (way) too high. Maybe to bring people in to offer their cars? I have some older catalogs, and the prices are gradually being adjusted, but the market drops quicker.
Probably the best way out for the good houses will be to offer less cars, and concentrate on truly nice and interesting ones. Leave the uninteresting stuff to the companies that push hundreds through, and the internet. Good fun don't buy.
Finally, the good and experienced dealers that specialise in limited brands are always nice to have as friend. Still the minority of good cars is sold at auctions...
    Interesting times!

Mecum DID have some serious modern F car muscle for sale. Saw 599 GTO sold for $680K and 599 SA sold for $1.05M. IMHO these buyers got a GREAT deal relative to what the cars are retailing at (at least with respect to AP's). I don't know if these "sales" #'s include the 10% buyers premium. Also saw that LaF received a HUGE # of over $4M. Seems to me that some of the newer (ie. read that to be younger) well heeled buyers like the newer LE V12 F cars more than the older school F cars. Don't see a trend yet but definitely something to look at if your an investor.

It has been a buyer's market for quite some time already and all the dealers that in the past few years bought cars for inventory are now sitting on their hands and there are no end users nowadays.
    Gooding begins in 30 mins.
