The 612 is one of the most beautifull sports cars built by Ferrari, together with the 312p....too bad none of them was very competitive
The b/w picture in backgound shows a 500F2 ( or a 625F1) towed by a Fiat 600 Multipla of the Automobile Club of Modena. This scene, reproduced in foreground on the two die cast models, can be dated (perhaps...) from 1956 ahead, because that Fiat went on sale from spring 1956. Somebody says that this racing car was towed to the railways station in order to a shipping. Who knows more about this fact ? What was the meaning of towing a four years old racing car, through the Modena streets ? Does somebody knows which was exactly the racing car and why was there ? Ferrari, Maserati and OSCA tested their team- and customer cars on the Autodromo, a kind of a circuit with a small airport in the middle. It was located in the center of Modena. In those days the cars were driven by the mechanics or towed behind lorrys. So a possible Autodromo tour is another one to the train thesis. Ciao! Walter
Respectfully disagree. 312P had a 2nd at Sebring and at Spa. Chris Amon with the 612 had a 2nd and one or two 3rd place finishes in Can Am against the all conquering McLarens. On style both were the class of the field, they were the last of the truly beautiful Ferrari sports racers.

Was that 500F2 ( or 625 F1) still owned by Ferrari or not more ? If yes, why to test such an old car (disused from at least three seasons) ? Did that car went from Maranello (23 Kms far), poorly towed by an other car, just to be tested on the Aerautodromo ? Didn't they have a truck to do that ? Why to use a Fiat 600 Multipla owned by the Automobile Club of Modena and not a Ferrari vehicle ? I guess that there is an other and more plausible story behind that picture and those die cast models. Ciao Andrea
It is difficult to tell from the murky photograph but is the racecar possibly a Maserati 250F? They were front line grand prix cars through 1958 and run by privateers beyond that. Walter care to chime in?
No doubt, the racing car is a Ferrari. The die cast model is a Ferrari and who owns it and the picture, states that is totally a Ferrari event. I don't know more. Ciao Andrea
I don't think we desagree at all, we both agree they were the most beaufifull sports cars Ferrari ever made.....and, if they didn't won a single race, i can't call them very competitive cars....but as you said, in terms of style they were head and shoulders above the competition.
Andrea, as you know - in Italy everything was possible. Perhaps the car was used on the Autodromo by an amateur race driver. This kind of drivers used old cars until the early 60s. Ciao! Walter
Yes, but does somebody knows the reason why two ( not just one ) die cast producers decided to realize such a particular subject ? If a common towing, why to reproduce it, through a model ? This was a special event, so which one was it ? Ciao Andrea
