    Mike,

You make some very valid points, but I'd like to point out that, as you say, prices are all over based on mileage and condition.

The spread is too large. I feel the gap will close on this spread with time and as the market evolves.

    Just my personal observation.

Also- in the case of '94's with ABS- They are even more rare, and a higher mileage car will still be desirable.

I mention that because 512TR's are not many overall, and with time, I believe, mileage aside, the values will go up, and people will then choose to spend money on the ones of lesser quality cars as prices rise and make them worthwhile to do so, and then subsequent values overall will reflect a smaller spread than they do now.

This process is very typical of many models as they appreciate, and only seems to make sense

For the Gullwing, it's the fact that it's the most important car Mercedes ever made, an icon in its own right, comes from the glamour era of sports cars ('50s and '60s), and has a lot of racing glory associated with it. Even a rusty, banged up Gullwing is a prize. (Mercedes keeps trying to recapture the magic, but I doubt an SLS will ever ascend to 300 SL heights of desirability.)

As to whether the TR/512 TR series is comparable, the answer is no -- at least right now. Given the importance of mileage for the Ferrari, I think we're still in a situation where the odometer is worth more than the car, and the car itself has less significance.

When we see TMU cars bringing good money, then I'll be persuaded that current values aren't silly speculation.

We are not seeing daytona's and dino's and 365''s and 275's with 2500 original miles anymore.
their numbers were even lower in production.
if there were such unicorns..they would be the most desirable and the higher mile cars be second most..

This fad of collecting and stashing that happened in the 80's and 90's is not applicable to 60's and 70's cars..

For This the game has changed..

If Cars were women, and age caused wrinkles and cellulite..
Would you pick the teenager or the mid lifer???

    KEY:
    1000 to 5000 miles = teenager
    5000 to 10,000 miles = in her 20's
    10,000 to 20,000 miles = in her 30's
    20,000 and up =.......forgetaboutit !

    just my opinion...

Michael, even with age and miles, I would take a Sophia loren type anyday over a younger Brittany spears or miley cyris type any day of the year.

Then we are in agreement, this is silly speculation.
I love my 512tr. I bought it for a song 15 years ago and have travelled 20k miles with it and loved every minute of it. I could not give a damn whether it is worth 150k or 450k, and I would not trade the 20k miles for 300k dollars.
And this is the real shame of the speculative rise in lower mileage cars, their owners are trapped into being permanently static. And thus whatever car I might want to buy next , it will be a higher mileage car so that my entry cost is low and I can drive it as much as I like - that's what life is about.

because the dinos are 20 yrs older no? build quality was different in 72 so the cars deteriorated quicker - It takes 40+ yrs for mileage to become less significant. for whatever reason inside 30 yrs mileage matters a lot.

I don't think anyone wld disagree - if ur goal is to drive it like crazy the higher mileage cars are a no brainer. if you instead are going to keep a collection of 20 cars or greater for example, it's very difficult to drive that many cars much...

I think the miles don't matter past a certain age. You know the guy who last drove and parked that blue 250 California Spider that recently sold for over 11 million? I bet he did not think to himself, "Let me drive this car until it needs a full service, and while I'm at it, forget washing it too. Now that should do it, looks like several million dollars worth to me."

We see the difference between originality and restoration. One thing is for sure, all these restored cars are selling to people who care about the restoration, not the miles.

My car was always a driver, but i give it the best care that I can.

52,000 miles never looked so good.

Correct. Single worst thing in the collector car hobby is the obsession over mileage on collector cars. It's harmful to the hobby and any chance there is to ridicule it should be taken. After a certain age and after restoration, this is true. The idea that mileage on collector cars should be valued like mileage on mass produced new cars is a false premise. As an extreme example, a collector racecar driven 24 hours in a small French town can increase a car tenfold.

TRs are not worth what Countaches are. All that matters with a CT is condition. The fact that TRs are 'collected' and valued according to how they are not driven is a shame and should be discouraged on the merits.

I think that the value of the countach is partially based on the production number. The car (excluding the Anniversary) is around 1300, right?

I do think the 512tr is higher due to the 2200 production number, but devalued due to the 7000 Testarossa produced. But in the US, a 409 production run of the 512tr must have something to due with the values here. 409 is a very low number. Im going to guess that it is equal to the number of US F40s available.

PS...how does mileage affect the value of the F40 in the US?
