It's a work of art! Can you image the skills necessary to build that?

Anyway - since you started this thread, I'll offer up this contribution. It's on the other end of the size scale. Very cool engine:

    sitting for 30 years?

The gasoline/petrol is probably like varnish.

I would change the engine oil first before attempting the turn the engine.

"All we did was check fuel and pressure".

If I had a valuable engine, that had been sitting for 30 years, I would have:

    1. Changed all fluids
    2. Borescoped cylinders
    3. Replaced all fuel lines.
    4. Replaced spark plugs
    5. Replaced ignition leads

Of course, these guys may have done all this. In fact, since they seem to be a Porsche shop, I'd guess they did.

    Other things I'd do:

    6. Hooked up external fuel and oil pressure gauges, external temp gauge, so that I could monitor everything without having to duck into the cockpit.
    7. Had a fan blowing fresh/cold air into the engine fan
    8. Hooked up ducting so that exhaust would flow outside the shop.

Finally, I probably wouldn't have a bunch of guys leaning over the engine during fire-up.

There are some people that have truly awesome talent.

This guy should open shop, producing unobtanium parts for rare cars.

Well all of the above Sid, Jonathan but I know what I'd do at the very least after doing all the fluids (except water) is:
    1. pull the plugs
2.spray in penetrating fluid into all the bores, leave for a couple of days
3.turn engine over by hand checking rings are not frozen in.
4.turn engine over on the starter without plugs clearing the bores of penetrating fluid and until oil pressure is registering.
5.replace the plugs and only then go for an engine start.

Oh just played this to Emily, she nearly had an orgasm and she's not even into Porsches.
She said and I quote: 'Oh my god that's a sound that could chew your ..... off!'
    Think she's a petrol head.....

    Wrong answers above
What it needed was a stack of 'start yer bastard' squirted directly into the carbs to get it turning over.
Once this is achieved tap the carbs with a 13mm spanner to adjust.
    No further action required.

I remember going to Monterey one year once about 20 years ago or so, and a guy had built a working model engine of a 512BB, a bit smaller than the one in the video Bell uploaded. Everything was there, and everything was miniaturized, except the starter. He said he couldn't make a real starter motor that small, so he started it with a drill, I think. But it was brilliant, quite something to see in person.
