I am living in another century. When your word was a bond. In this case Bretts shop did not have the skills needed. He farmed out paint and interior. Those shops did a great job. Job written is great. But what is it really worth when the shop is not capable?

Seems like you get ripped off far too often.

Whether it's a a mechanic, contractor or lawyer, you are very consistent.

One has to start to wonder if YOU are the problem!

Good luck with all your drama.

    Cheers

    Good day Dave,

Indeed executing proper paperwork for any type of project is the way one should proceed so that both parties know what is expected of one another. However, having proper paper does not guarantee that one will not have problems... whether it be the work done, the quality of that work, or if the customer does not or refuses to pay.

Given that having proper paper and documentation minimizes future issues with customers, I would ask why some firms do not insist on creating that paper before they start? After all they are the "Professionals" and/or specialty services provider and as such I feel it is their responsibility to educate and guide the customer/client as to what is needed before a project is undertaken or what (technical) risks/problems that can arise. That is one of the primary reasons one enlists professionals, etc... you are hiring them for specialty skills and advice.

    Cheers,

    Sam

Don't fool yourself, these companies/firms specifically do not like a paper trail so they can't be pinned down...seems quite common in the car industry where 'each car is different', 'you don't know what the costs are until you are really into it', and so on.

I have a bunch of friends who're or have been in restoration processes or more extensive rebuilds and this practice is very common by shops. No written estimates, either low- or high-end, etc.

On the other hand there are a few shops that give estimates so high that they filter out the customers without the deepest pockets, so maybe that's a strategy? A friend of a friend had a $30K estimate to redo/rebuild brakes on a 70s Ferrari at Rocco's in Toronto - how's that for a written guarantee/estimate?

I love to read about your car related experiences.

The rip off reports, not so much.

Best of luck in all your future endeavors.

See attached… doesn't even include a single nut, bolt, washer, clamp or any hoses at all…

But, like you, I don't care anymore… you turned this into something ugly and I just want it over with.

Let me ask you something, do you always NEED to be at war with somebody/anybody all of the time ?

Is that what makes you tick ?

Anyway, the below list includes of the valuable stuff that I gave you… we'll call iota even for the computer.

    Thanks again for that.

Haven't looked at all of this in detail but this one stood out:

"Dec 16 - Scott - Front cover installation -Torque not possible, threads pulled and o-rings provided by customer are not correct.
    Labour 65 6.5 $422.50"

Really? Six and a half hours to determine that it was not possible to torque the front cover bolts, "threads pulled" and to determine o rings aren't correct? Six and a half hours? This is on an engine that is out of the car, right? What should this take? An hour, tops?

And now that we have identified problem, let's take another 13.5 hours to fix it plus do some other stuff:

Dec 17 - Scott - Repair all threads at cover,
    clean lifter buckets and shims.
    Labour 65 7 $455.00
Dec 18 - Scott - Install front cover, install tensioner arm, install cams, install caps and torque, install flywheel, torque.
    Labour 65 6.5 $422.50

How many other times might be inflated?

    Good day John,

Me neither... but a few things I noticed:

    1. Why is there no work hour break down from Jan 10 to Nov 25 (the last part of Mitchell's (paste) ?

    2.
I will have to check what I got charged for my mousehair work on my 365... But the mousehair alone for every piece of the interior cost $1225 USD + some importation fees... That leaves around $5600 for labor and margin... seems a bit much, but like I said I will have to check.

    3. Front seat upholstery:
Luppi in Italy wanted 12000 Euro + shipping to/from to do the complete interior (less the mousehair) in Connolly. Again, this just seems high... but perhaps the Upholstery shop Brett uses charge this rate.

    3. Why were invoices not provided all along if they were indeed created as the project progressed? It just seems odd that when Mitchell requested invoices that it took a while to send them... Secondly, with most businesses an invoice is submitted and then the customer can review, etc and then remit payment... It is uncommon for businesses to simply ask for payments without any forwarding documentation/invoices and expect a customer to simply pay.

    4. I also get the impression from statements made by Mitchell that he was unaware that there were any monies owing and that it only came to light when he enlisted legal services to obtain his property. If monies were indeed owing why was Mitchell not made aware of the outstanding balance prior to them shipping him his car? Seems odd to me that a business would simply ship a customers car and then withhold other customer's property once the customer wished his property returned.

    Wow... what an ordeal...

    Cheers,

    Sam

extended dollar RH side did not transfer. dollar summary indicates I owe $14,834.81 on the Ferrari and $30,000 on the Merak. big surprise since I had ask repeatedly if Brett needed any money and was told no. none of this was known by me until a phone call the week. days of billing hours without detail does not sit well. I have been had. so I have a car with a fu--ed up motor, problem yet to be determined. it cost me $15,000 just to get the car to function and road worthy. now brett wants $45,000 more for a motor/transmission assy. really.

There is a lot of labour there that is not itemised! Even the labour that is itemised seems excessive for a professional shop experienced in this model. These labour figures are about what I'm spending on the restoration of 40877 & I'm a novice to this model & learning as I go.
