    Thanks for the compilation.

Just one thing: Modern Testarossas have a one-word model designation (vs the racing Testa Rossas from the late-1950s & early-1960/). Sorry to nit-pick....

What a money! There is quite a difference in price development. The end 50's and 60 cars are more than the flavour of the month where early '50 cars are quite stable.
Oh and the F40 is quite popular too :)

Would be nice to make a poll with our predictions and actual results, the winner may pick his choice from the list (smiley)

A 250 GT SWB California Spider with covered headlights was sold this week from USA to England for US$ 14 M.
A 250 GT Cabriolet Series One with open headlights was sold this week from Switzerland to Germany.
A 512 M racing car from 1971 sold a few days ago from the UK to France.
    All for huge money.
There is A LOT of pre-Monterey activity, the market is nuts/out of control.

Well people will figure out that early fifties car are not that easy/ simple to drive except a few,,,and those who enjoy their driving are being priced out!
In any case I would be interested to figure out how many of those cars are going to be driven as they were intended to, afterwards.

How do you feel guys to drive a 3- 5 MUSD car on the open road and leave it parked in the street?

When a man of such standing and so close to the action thinks this, then nows the time to bail out of these cars in my humble opinion, or at least wait it out a while.

Marcel, in the main are the current buyers the new money or speculator type of the late 80s using other peoples or borrowed money? or are they still wealthy collectors who are just parking there own spare cash into a tangible asset they can admire and maybe utilise.

If its the former then its scary for anyone who has purchased an appreciating car in recent times, if its the latter then the good thing is they wont be forced to dump them back into the market when it cools and hopefully stabilises.

Also Is it Eastern European/ Russian/ Chinese markets that are fueling the boom or still the traditional countries

No Eastern Europeans, no Russians, only a few Chinese.
Mainly Americans and European buyers (Brits, Germans, Belgians and Dutch, plus Swiss), several Middle Eastern buyers, several newly founded classic car funds (I know of four such funds that have bought a series of classic Ferraris in the last 12 months). There is also a large number of new, fresh billionaires that really need to park their funds somewhere. If you have a net worth of, say, just 2 billion $, then 30 or 40 M $ is just lunch money.
And in the UK and Ireland are several very active investors with extremely deep pockets, some of them really big fishes.

So just in case you think its just Ferrari's for sale at Monterey and we all love them, lets look just a little more in depth at what each auction company is doing. Hell we all love Ferraris, thats why its called Ferrarichat and not pokemonchat ruight but I am sure all of you can also appreciate other fine classic cars.......

Bonhams have stolen a march on all the other auction sites by landing the biggest fish of all, a GTO, but of cause they also landed some pretty awesome other cars from the Violatti collection especially the 250MM and then they have a whole pile of others that are desrable such as the F40LM (rare), the 312T4 Grand Prix car (very rare) and the ex Prince Bertil GT and then there are the other million dollar cars

    1937 BMW 328 #85095 $1 - $1.2 mil. Bonhams #267 (ex Simeone)
    1970 Brabham BT33 #BT33-2 $1 - $1.4 mil. Bonhams #257 ('70 South African GP winner)
    1938 Bugatti Type 57 #57-715 $1.1 - $1.3 mil. Bonhams Bonhams #256
    1955 Lancia Aurelia B24S Spider America #1177 $1.3 - $1.5 mil. Bonhams #249
    1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster #7500242 $1.15 - $1.4 mil. Bonhams #292
    1963 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing #3174 $1.9 - $2.2 mil. Bonhams #216 (Alloy engine & Discs)
    1908 Napier Type 23A 45HP Touring Car #4134 $1.1 - $1.4 mil. Bonhams #254
    1970 Porsche 908/3 #908/03-002 $1.8 - $2.3 mil. Bonhams #234 (Test & Development car)
    1974 Porsche 911 RSR #4609113 $1.1 - $1.4 mil. Bonhams #246 (9 times entrant at Sebring)
    1963 Shelby Cobra 260 #CSX2119 $550,000 - $650,000 Bonhams #231 (FoMoCo demonstrator)
    1948 Talbot-Lago T26 Gran Sport Oblin Berlinetta #110106 $1.1 - $1.3 mil. Bonhams #242('53 Spa 24 Hours)

Some pretty awesome cars especially the Porsche's, BMW, Type 57 Bug, Napier and Talbot Lago, hell even the Brabham which is the last car that Jack Brabham won a race in would be worth a shot if that yer cup of tea. But again there is more, perhaps those with slighty more normal pockets (slightly LOL)

The '49 Maserati A6G (lot 287) with actual racing history estimated at $500 - 700k looks a good buy as does the one off Moretti Coupe 3500GT (lot 232) at similar money, albeit not to everyones taste. There is the '12 Speedwell Speed car (lot 231) for something totally different and it is the only one left. Finally the selection of Rolls begins with the Horden Ghost (lot 250), continues with a very good Hooper bodied Phantom II (lot 237), the absolutely stunning (lot 222) Thrupp & Maberley Phantom III, absolutely ripe for concours success and the absolutely ridiculous one off Vignale bodied Silver Wraith (lot 239) complete with a loo (dunny to us kiwis and aussies).

But for all of the above really it all flies and dies on the success of the sale of the GTO, like it or not as a interested bystander we dont just want to see it sell, we want to see it smash all previous records like a sledgehammer and to absolutely blow up the market. If the car sells for less than say $50 million there will be pundits that will claim its a disapointing result for Bonhams and perhaps with the sale dramas another layer of reason for big price mania will be added. The way I see it this isnt the best GTO out there AND it has been shopped around and anything more than $40 will be a great result and set by far the new highest price for a car ever sold at public auction. What perhaps will be more interesting than the sales price is who it sells to, is the answer to the question Simon Kidston (one of THE greatest car dealers) has asked, will it sell to a previous owner?, TOUCHE Simon.

Due to the sale of Bonhams itself maybe they need the GTO to sell big, add brand value or some such, just to add another layer of BS or intrigue depending on your view. And it certainly is a risk to sell at no reserve, maybe (a dutch?) bidder could be organized to bid it to an appropriate level, kind of a suck it and see approach. Whatever happens, Bonhams have suddenly positioned themselves at the forefront of Automobile auctioneers and next year will be hard to beat. Looking through there catalog this year its like Santa's grotto with cars in every segment be it Grand Prix, Touring, GT, Sports Racing, 1930s, 1920s, Vintage. Everyone is catered for. And perhaps post selling several absolutely mint cars, Birkin Bentley, Merc W196 and Alfa 8C/35 they will add both the 250MM and 250GTO at $10 million plus. RM and Gooding say hello to the new kid in town and while you are at it say goodbye to some of the market share.

    Good times......

I will try and post the sales results come mid August but for now its late here in NZ and I am off to bed, tomorrow I will post a similar look at RM, Gooding, Rick Cole, Mecum and Russo & Steele. Just because I can.

That for sure is not gonna happen as to the best of my knowledge all previous owners of 250 GTO #3851 GT are no longer alive: Joseph Schlesser (died 7 July 1968), Henri Oreiller (died 7 October 1962), Paolo Colombo (exact date unknown), Ernesto Prinoth (died 26 November 1981) and Fabrizio Violati (died 21 January 2010).

Thank you Marcel for the swift reply.

Those are some very interesting facts, in that case even when things plateau and stabilise in theory there should not be a sharp negative correction / bubble burst anytime soon.

Here in the UK the economy is gathering pace but the Bank of England seems reluctant to kill those green shoots with interest rate rises as they have in the past, I am in the construction industry and we generally get hit first and come out last in a recession but it feels very much like the late 90s now where people are feeling positive again after a big downturn of the preceding years, we did not have .5% base rates that time but 1% over base was an achievable mortgage so around 5% all in, which is about the same % now for a mortgage so the banks are making lots and lots of money this time and only lending to very secure people so that will also fuel an upturn in that sector as well.

Maybe the million pound F40 is not that far away after all

Although I really do NOT have a crystal ball I don't think there will be sharp correction or burst of a bubble anytime soon. Prices might just stabilize a bit. Can the market really absorb more than 100 classic Ferraris in five different auctions and four nights at Monterey? We will know in about 3 weeks. However, the real problem today is that if you are just a regular multi-millionaire you can not play with the billionaires.

Same interior as the one of a kind serial 12925 targa top also 1969 production. For many years part of Matsuda collection. Maybe Ferrari was experimenting with different interiors at the start of production. Regards.....

Has anybody already calculated the rough total value of those 105 Ferraris at the MRY auctions (high estimates plus 10 percent premium)?

Marcel- your answer is exactly what bothers me in this market. 'Park' their money. Parking means it is temporary. Parking means alarm bells. Parking means prices are not sustainable. And classic car funds are a recipe for disaster. This does not bode well for the classic car market. Guys you better fasten your seat belts. Its going to be a wild ride. For me the million dollar question is what Marcel has asked: Can the market absorb all those cars? We will know soon.
