This is what we believed happened. The small bearing on the front of the oil pump driveshaft fell apart. It caused the oil pump shaft to wobble and strip the teeth off which connect it to the pump. This starved the motor of oil causing the camshaft previously shown to seize in place. Once the camshaft seized it kicked the belt off locking up the driver side bank.

Missing bearing with outer race still inside the hole.

Thank you for this thread. Great information. So I'm trying to decide what to take away from this for me, and I believe that we probably should be checking that oil pump shaft bearing behind the sprocket.

Last major I did I did not remove the sprocket to remove the front timing cover, but this time I will :)

    Thank you.

Honestly it's a freak accident. I don't think you would even be able to tell if the bearing is about to fail or not before it does. It's a shame a $15 dollar bearing caused all of this.

    I know, right? Frustrating.
I guess we could make the case for prophylactic replacement of this bearing but what about the other one at the back of the shaft where it connects to the oil pump??? Can't turn every major into a complete teardown.

Yeah there is no way to prevent this. At the end of the day it's a machine made of a hundreds of individual parts. Things fail.

Later in this thread you will find a few design changes interesting in the new parts we bought. Looks like either Ferrari picked up on a few possible issues.

Wow. I absolutely did not see that coming based on the first post. As always, thanks for sharing.

Do you mean the teeth were worn down and no longer mesh in order to drive the oil pump?

I can't believe the bearing would just fall apart on it's own. Was there debris that lodged in the pump itself causing high drive effort?

It will be interesting to see how you handle the bearing 170787 issue. I hope you can give us some guidance.

WOW! That is shockingly low mileage. When we tore open my '77 308 it didn't look too much different than this engine, but mine had 67,000 on it.

Great pics of a sad machine...
    Thanks for sharing.

How long do you think it ran without oil?

Shouldn't an oil pressure light have come on right away?

    Must have sounded awful :(

Another possible problem is a sticking relief valve. There's not a lot of effort required to drive an oil pump with normal pressure but if the relief valve sticks it could get sky high.
    Is the coupler split?
