me and 3 buddies actually tried to buy a car, a 917 in AW in 73-74(?)-I remeber the ad was just like this, like it was yesterday! I made an overseas call(from boarding school!)... The guy wouldn't take us seriously, he couldn't beleive a few kids from America had this sort of money to spend on an obsolete racing car! We were going crazy-we thought we were going to get a 917K! He thought it was a hoax, I said I could be in europe in 36 hrs with bank certified funds in Zurich...he got serious quickly-he flat ouit said he wouldn't sell it to a bunch of kids-we would kill ourselves in 10 minutes sort of an attitude... he was likely right..... Thats as close as I ever got to a 917K - as an owner.... what sux is: I HAD the money, and the means, the guy just wouldn't sell it to us... hows THAT for one that got away.. this thread is killing me...
Had to be the one I posted from July 73. I think $25,000 as asked here, is the lowest price published for a 917 (at least one that's race-ready). Yeah that car is not necessarily known for a good choice for beginners.... You didn't have to drop $25k to kill yourself in a Porsche racer though. The more fiscally frugal youngster could have done himself in in a 906 for under $10k. Of course you need not go to those lengths at all, a used 71 Pinto was a death trap available to anyone with around $1,100. I also have an update on GTO prices, I'm looking into a transaction from January 1975, where a Swiss collector had sold one to an American for 80.000 Sfr ($31,000 USD). There was also another one for sale in the UK, summer 1974 for 10,800 PDS ($25,000 USD). That summer an LM was also being offered by a Swiss man for 58,000 Sfr ($21,000 USD).

once the 917 had been legislated out of existence(Redbull/Renault/Infiniti???) for utterly dominating its class, they became, as had GTOs, 250TRs,, SWBs, ad nauseau before them...merely another cool , OLD, obsolete, raceing car-al be they somewhat expensive, obsolete racing cars... there was another ad I responded to, where it had a 4 speed short course box, 6 sp. long course box, short AND long tail, 2 spare engines 24 wheels,, asorted other "spares" for the outrageous amount of-yup, $25,000.00 For some reason, there was a small window of time where the carss being shopped, were all done so at or about 25K, to the best of my memory-keeping in mind that an LM was a good 10K less in this time frame...904GTS was a 4-6000.00 car, an Abarth carrera with original type 692/3a was a whoppping 6500.00-asking! It goes on and on like this... There was the guy in VA who street registered a 917-it made National news and was noted in most magazines... worhty of note, the 917s that were being sold in this time frame were all K versions as the turbo era was only jnust dawning, the "big" motor to score was the 5.4 "interseies" version used in the "german can-am" as it was frequently referred to by guys I was around...flunder bodied-rebodied 917Ks, just another life for an obsolete, old, racing car....

Yes, that's 917-030. Still owned by the Rossi family. In addition, there's 917-021 (012) which Joachim 'Achim' Grossmann converted to road use in the mid-1970s (with German registration 'CW-K 917'), running with a 4.9-liter motor supplied by Willy Kaushen.

It looks like you have some form of reference system going on with your files, is there any chance you can look up my car and see if you have any old adverts: Ferrari 275GTB Chassis 07333. It spent most of its life in America until i bought it Aug 2009. many thanks Mark
