Will you soon want to buy a Toyota (such as the GT86)?

  1. Wow! That actually looks like a neat little car - I'm impressed.

  2. It looks good, but I have concerns about whether it will actually be a good drive or not.

  3. I'm not interested in that particular Toyota.

  4. I'm not going to consider any Toyota.

They will give you headaches even if it was a dealer installed upgrade? Certain TRD upgrades don't void the warranty. Obviously it's a bit more money but in all essence it's still an OEM unit.

I'm all for dealer-installed upgrades, so long as the dealer will continue to service the car, the warranty remains intact, and it doesn't cause insurance issues by being classified as a "modified car". If Brembos are a dealer-installed option, then that'd be fantastic. :)

My MINI was bought new and, after the warranty expired I modified with aftermarket options (some of which were official John Cooper Motorsport kits that were declared as "aftermarket" modifications by the insurers) and simultaneously insured reasonably by a specialist modified car insurer. Soon thereafter the car was rejected by the dealer (would no longer service it), I suffered botched servicing/repairs by several garages before I finally found a good one to put things right, and then the insurers kept dramatically increasing the rates year after year in the knowledge that it would be more expensive for me to reverse the modifications than to continue paying the increasing insurance premiums. So, I'm understandably wary... I would want dealer-installed upgrades on the car for delivery day, so that I could tell the insurer "I ordered it new and under warranty as per this specification from the dealer".

    All the best,
    Andrew.

Check with the dealers and insurers. And the engine is only a 2.0 so it shouldn't be a biggie for displacement penalties if the insurance companies still do that. But to my knowledge the TRD brake upgrade package will not void the warranty, and if I may make a suggestion since I recollect you said you live in a hilly region, I advise the upgrade were you to get one. Just like my 240sx the brakes are good for occasional hard use and I emphasize on occasional, but when you start pushing it's the first thing to start thing to fade. I found that the hard way when a dealer brought one at the local autocross session.

    Interesting design.
Kinda looks like a witch's brew of several flavors.
    Mustang, Enclave, Reo, Evolution.
The inside middle vent looks like a squished egg.
    Black,Black and more Black.
Toyota parts are relatively cheap, Subaru's are not.
    2+2 ? 2 adults and 2 children or 2 adults and 2 hobbits.
Does Subaru build an engine that does'nt use premium ?
Why no a/c on the base model?
I do like the auto transmission and the rear tailights.
Exactly, what is LSD ? - Other than that stuff crazed hippies took to gain nirvanna ?
    I do own a Toyota.

LSD is the reason some cars leave a number 11 on the road and others leave a 1.

    Is LSD, Limited Slip Differential?
This is where one tire spins and the other tire grabs.
This would create the number 1.
Whereas Posi-Traction would allow for both tires to grab.
    And create the number 11.
Can you correct my understanding ?

I thought about this car some more while I have hot wings cooking in the oven, while cruising somewhere in Ohio on I-70.
Some things I would like and some things I would not.
Front and rear fog lights, 120 watts up front, 60 watts in rear.
Automatic transmission with 8 forward gears and 2 reverse gears, I'm thinking I might want to get out of trouble faster than I got into it.
    Non power rack and pinion.
    Jake brake.
Don't need silly paddle shifters, just need a straight gate from park right into drive.
Simple AM/FM stereo with single CD player.
    Locking differential in/out switch.
No navigation, no mp3, no Bluetooth,no USB.
I would rather have a smaller displacement engine that got 10_15 MPG more , by the way, where am I gonna drive 160 MPH anyways.
Maybe I will test drive one when I get a chance.

Yes limited slip differential is lsd. Best mechanical method of traction coming out of corners, I'm not very familiar with posi-trac or detroit lockers. They seem to be big on drag racing, a sport I don't give 2 sh*ts about. I'm going to assume they lock both wheels together.

It is possible for a lsd to leave 11 on the road as well. Open diffs put the 1 on pavement.

A limited slip differential depending on the variant will lock on both acceleration and/or deceleration. And most mechanical units use clutches, to adjust the slip and lock. Diffs can get very complicated. There are many different kinds of limited slips. And an open diff is just that. something to direct the power from the driveshaft to the axle. For a good sports car, I would recommend a well set up 1.5 way lsd.

Coincidentally, I just read the following from evo co-founder, Richard Meaden:

Subaru BRZ vs Subaru Impreza 2000 Turbo

Here's the comparo linked to through the text in bold in the original:

None of which negates either Meaden's points or the honesty of his convictions. (Catchpole had similar observations when he drove one from southern France, I think, to the UK.)

    Thanks, Dazzling.

I've put over 10k miles onto mine so far. The only improvements I would like would be about 40-50 more horsepower, and the radio needs some buttons on it for preset stations so you don't have to keep looking at the touch screen to find the button you want. Otherwise it deserves every bit of praise it's getting.

I've been reading good things about Perrin Performance on the BRZ boards. There was also a company that was putting out 30 hp with headers, full exhaust, and a tune, but I don't remember who it was. The nice thing is that there is not shortage of companies developing for the car. Personally I'm planning to wait a little longer to see if any problems arise over a longer period of time with aftermarket offerings.

I modified a MINI and once I did (suspension, brakes, exhaust, and intake), the BMW/MINI dealer would no longer go anywhere near my car. Even though I waited until the car was out of warranty, they would no longer even service it. I'd wait until your warranty expires before doing any mods and keep in mind that you may need to search for an independent garage for any further servicing or repairs.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

This car is simply amazing - so much fun to drive. The best part about driving this car is that it is fun at any speed. Yes - could use a few more ponies - no doubt. This car is not the neck snapper by any means - but get it on a road with a healthy amount of turns and twists and it just makes me smile. Get it in the higher RPM ranges and it is a hoot. Road feel, handling - fantastic. Gun it a little in a turn and feel the rear slip out and you feel so alive!

This is not a car for those out there looking for stat bragging rights. That just isn't what it is at all. It is a lightweight, rear wheel drive, high revving little pocket rocket that's only goal is to give you a high fun factor without breaking the bank and also serving as a fun high MPG alternative to much more pedestrian vehicles. And the price- what a bargain. This is not a car for everyone and if you are a torque junky you will very disappointed.

Ill be first in line for a STI/r-spec model - a little more power and you will have something very special.

Also - 6'3" and I fit with room to spare.

Only complaints besides needing more power is blind spot visibility can be challenging if you are tall and need to have your seat all the way back. Also - stock tires are disappointing.

7k miles on mine and I keep liking it more and more.

Going up and down Laguna Canyon Road tonight was a blast.
