Well Jan, your Sharknose was the main reason to come to Spa and it was well worth it! I was there with Vu (Fumacher) and we were very excited when you drove through 'Les Combes' for the first time. And on sunday in the rain we were just smiling from excitement because of the unique setting with all the water splashing around. Great weekend and hope to see you and your cars at lots of events!

What a great window into the past. One reality that leaps out at me from this picture: Wonderful set up for heel & toe, essential back when drivers rowed down through the gears for every corner, my sense is that drivers were still using the gearbox to slow the car up until about this time period.

Terrible setup for left foot braking, now the norm, but obviously not a concern at all in 1961 since steering shaft blocks access.

    Hi guys,
watching the last picture posted a question came to my mind: did the Sharknose had 2 water coolers? Otherwise I can't understand why the water tube (hot coolant from engine maybe?) on the left of the picture has that "Y" shape.....
Could it be that the front radiator was used to cool oil in the middle section and water on the opposite side areas?

It seems that in those years was common to have a single radiator to cool oil and water but the 156 arrangement its a bit strange although really interesting!

I don't see 2 water radiators? This car has 2 air inlets but I do not believe they have 2 radiators, the nostrils are all styling.

If you look at pictures of the earlier front engined 246 Dino F1 race (as used by Mike Hawthorn to win his WDC for Ferrari) they also split the top radiator hose like this and yet is very obviously one radiator. I believe this is done so water is evenly extracted from the radiator, thus these radiators have 2 top hose outputs.

This picture comes from the Comic Book 'Hot Rods and Racing Cars' November 1962. We all know that racing had a much broader grip on the popular imagination in the fifties and sixties. But I thought it was remarkable that the illustrator would choose this car for his fictional race: this car only raced in one event in this livery, the Belgian GP in '61. Obviously it made a big impression. I thought he did a great job of capturing the dimensions and scale.

If you look at some pictures about the radiator taken from various angles you could see that in the bottom of it start 4 hoses: 2 oil ones and 2 that bring water back to the engine.
That is because I thought of a tri-partition of the radiator.

Thanks. I wonder what the advantage is?

Anyway learnt something, and now I think the 246 Dino F1 car probably had the same system.

    Jan,
Any thought on making some DVDs or putting it in iTunes?

I just finished reading "The Limit" and my son just did his research project on Phil Hill (he's 8, Hill is 3rd favorite driver, after Massa and Senna).
Amazing car, I hope to have a chance to see it in person someday.

    Hi Alex,
Derek Hill has a film made at Monza this year (he is sitting in the Sharknose on the Monza banking). You can see it here: http://vimeo.com/29706892
The film will not be shown in iTunes or youtube as it contains some historical scenes which I'm not allowed to show commercial or on the internet. The trailer however can be seen on youtube under: Ferrari Jaune.

    Regards,

    Jan

    Very cool link!

Derek was kind to loan a lot of his dad's photo/video to the Art Car Museum here.

I posted at the time, it was fantastic to see...

Not too many words are available to describe what has been achieved by this terrific crew, so this, will have to make do.
    Kind regards, Alberto
