The June 2006 issue of "Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car" contains a story of 1951 Fontana bodied 212 Barchetta 0086 E that has recently been rescued after 40 years in a barn in New Hampshire.
I took these pictures at the FCA national event during the Friday event at Grand Touring. I believe after looking at the motor that it was running. The car will one day be fabulous again. I heard that it had been found in a warehouse somewhere. regards Kcv Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Sorry to bump this thread, but new to this forum. I actually grew up in North Royalton (suburb of Cleveland) and was good friends with one of joe kortan's sons. We actually used to "play" in that GTO (we had to be careful because of the wasps nest in the back). That wasn't the only ferrari that Mr. Kortan had on his premise, he also had a 275 GTB and an old 4-seater ferrari (forgot the model). He lived with his family in an old farm with 2 rather large barns. In the barns were - 300sl gull-wing, Maserati 3500, MG-TC, DeTomaso Mangusta, an old Rambler, and some others English sports cars. I now live in Salzburg Austria but when I go home I drive past where the farm used to be (Mr. Kortan moved a long time ago) and sitting outside in the field is an older 5-series BMW and an early 80's Rolls Royce Cornich - read that right, sitting out in a field! I always wondered what happened to that GTO...
First of all: welcome on Fchat! Here is the 250 GTO you are looking for: http://www.barchetta.cc/english/All.Ferraris/Detail/3589GT.250GTO.htm Or try searching here on Fchat by the serial number (3589GT), for example: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=86367&highlight=3589 The car is now owned by Mr. Stieger, a Ferrari collector from Switzerland. If you happen to have more information on the cars of Mr. Kortan (or photographs...) please share )
I live just east of Cleveland in Mentor and I remember a newspaper article about 10 years ago talking about Mr. Kortan. In the paper was a picture of a 308 sitting in the yard and I tried to get the address to attempt to buy the car but the newspaper wasn't releasing the info. If you would tell me where the farm is I will be happy to drive by and update you.
Wow...that is an amazing story. Especially consdering the wide range of amazing cars you 'played' in. I would love to photograph the old Rolls....could you PM me a better idea of where this farm is?
Saw this stuff behind an old hot rod shop in Oildale, CA. (Bakersfield) There are 308 parts scattered everywhere. I live in Rotherham (in the UK) and around five years ago, I delivered chinese foood in my 355 Spider - just for fun!!! My friend Dave's car had broken down and rather than loan him one for the night, I thought it would be amusing to help him with deliveries in the Ferrari. It gave a whole new meaning to the term 'fast food' .
Like ten years ago a there was an ad for a house in a local real estate mag and the owner was throwing in a Countach with the house. Also, a few years back, on the show RHOOC, this guy was selling his house in the OC and he was also throwing in a 430.
I have similar stories to those posted. A good friend of mine lived down the street (Akins Rd.) The Kortan property was at inersection of Akins and Edgerton Rds in No. Royalton OH. Sat in each of the cars, added initials to the may in the build up of dust on the windows, etc. It was an great adventure to ride bikes down near the property, sneek through the woods and into the barn and sit in these awsome vehicles. One Ferrari was sitting in the tall grass, the drivers door had fallen off and a tree was growing through the window. Behind the barn was a Lotus racing car with a small tree growing through the center of the floor boards. These adventures are what helped inspire me to become an automotive engineer and work for each of the US big 3. Later in the 80's after the original lot was sold, they were replaced with the Rolls Royce mentioned earlier, a Ferrari 308, a Lamborghini Countach and numerous Mini Cooper iterations. The Lambo had a spot in the barn, but the rest were scattered in the tall grass around the barn. There was a Plain Dealer newspaper article about Mr. Kortan and his business back in 1971.
