I think I found the car Sterzi used at San Remo. Only 2 months after the San Remo GP Sterzi drove this 166 F2 at the Circuit des Remparts and in July he used this same car at the Circuito del Garda. Of both events I have the photographics, this one taken during the first. Image Unavailable, Please Login
It's not that easy. Sterzi was on the entry list for Marseille (21 May 1949) with a 2 litre Ferrari , but didn't showed up. He then entered for Roma (2 June 1949), but for unknown reasons the entry for r/n 28 showed 3 drivers, besides Sterzi also Franco Cornacchia and Ferdinando Righetti. Righetti finally started with what I believe was 01F. On 12 June 1949 Sterzi started at Angoulême with 01F. On 19 June 1949 he participated at the F2 race at Aix-les-Bains, but retired with a broken rear axle. The car was transported to Maranello for repair (Sterzi had a "full service contract" with Ferrari). But I am convinced that tricky Enzo fooled Sterzi, and sold 01F as 011F to the Argentinians. The story is rather speculative and off-topic here, but for Italy's most important F2 race at Monza on 26 June 1949 Sterzi was left without a car, although the entry list shows him with #20. Only at Garda on 12 July he was back in a 166 F2, but this was NOT #01F. Compare the photos. For me it looks like Sterzi bought a 166 F2 from Ferrari, which was not ready in time. Ferrari was extremely short on cars in the 1st half of 1949. For San Remo obviously there was an alternative, but not for Marseille, and for Rome Ferrari rented 01F to Righetti. The alternative for San Remo was either #02C (delivered to Vandervell after countless reminders only early May - by airlift!), or a Spyder Corsa. Probably the same SC Sterzi drove at Garda 1948, and at the Targa Florio 1949, a car which only could have been the 9th Spyder Corsa because the whereabout of all others is known.
Can someone explain the number 01F? I've never heard of a Ferrari number like it before. What do they signify? Are there any other 'F's?
Good question! The 01F is reported to be shown on the invoice from Ferrari to Sterzi, unfortunately up to now I was not able to find a copy of this. It is also shown on the list of cars issed by Ferrari's Modena customer service department. And "1F" is stamped on the tipo 166 F2 engine actually at the Schlumpf Collection at Mulhouse, and which came with the Staechelin car (ex Scuderia Espadon). Other known "F" designations are only 011F, the 1st ACA car, and 013F, the 2nd ACA car (LWB). And engine 7F (2.0 s/c) which belonged to 011F. It seems that Ferrari had the idea to number the customer formula (F) cars separately from the works cars (C for corsa) with odd numbers, but dropped this idea rather soon. Whitehead's car was 10C, and all other cars sold to privateers kept their original C number. And exactly this gap between 01F and 011F makes me believe that 011F was renumbered from 01F.
a step aftward http://www.amis-du-circuit-de-gueux.fr/1948-Coupe-des-Petites-Cylindrees who drove the 166sc #44 on Reims 1948?
#44 was Jean Hémard, Ecurie Monopole Poissy, with a Monopole-Simca. But the car looks indeed like a SC... Only other Ferrari besides Sommer and Righetti was Prince Igor with #42.
No, only the F1 GP and the supporting F2 "petit cylindres" race. And the race numbers 26 and 28 of the other 2 Ferraris are in line with the entry list.
I have found this list of the F1 GP suggesting no44 with Besana: - 2 CHIRON TALBOT - 4 G.CABANTOUS TALBOT - 6 RAPH TALBOT - 8 ROSIER TALBOT - 10 COMOTTI TALBOT - 12 CHABOUD DELAHAYE - 14 POZZI DELAHAYE - 16 MARTIN CTA ARSENAL - 18 SOMMER CTA ARSENAL - 20 FARINA SIMCA GORDINI - 22 X... SIMCA GORDINI - 24 X... X... - 26 ASCARI ALFETTE - 28 SANESI ALFETTE - 30 WIMILLE ALFETTE - 32 VILLORESI MASERATI - 34 X... Hah, got it! Soave Besana was tough enough to act as rolling chicane in the F1 main event - with #44!
