I know a few of you are sick of posts regarding the current market, or show no interest whatsoever in looking at past selling prices. This thread is NOT for those people. This post IS for the people who have PM'd me requesting such information. This thread is NOT to be merged with my "ads from the past" thread, as this one focuses solely on the GTO, and will feature very few ads, as GTO's were only advertised in magazines on extremely rare occasions, where 2/3 of the time the ad didn't even feature an asking price! (my 6th grade English teacher would kill me for that last run-on sentence!)

I am 99.9% confident of the accuracy of these ads, and as you can see, some bits of info are missing for some. Any additions and/or corrections are highly encouraged, especially from the 70s.

    3757GT - 1978 - Nick Mason - $86,000 (Though He Claims to have
Paid 37000 Sterling, which equals to $71,000 US given the '78EXRT).

Can we give Nick Mason the benefit of the doubt and call it $71,000.

    3765GT - 1967 - Mario Tosi - $8,000
    should read 3765LM

    3607GT - 1990/May - Hans Thulin - $9,588,780
I was told Mr. Thulin/AB Consolidator never completed the transaction (didn't pay for it) so the sale never took place. Therefore, this would just represent a 'bid' rather than a sale.

    3607GT - 1991/August - Giorgio Perfetti - $6,900,000
I was told this was not a cash sale but a trade involving a P car (one of the 60's Ferrari Sports Racing prototypes) and other consideration.

    3607GT - 1994 - Robson Walton - $3,500,000
I request we call him Mr. Walton or Robson Walton and keep the business separate from the person.

    4757GT - 1982/May-ish - Drug Lord - $345,000
Can we change this to Christopher Murray and then annotate his occupation on the later sale transaction via FBI/US Gov't auction.

    5095GT - 2008/July - ??? - $25,000,000
There's a separate thread on this. Price is too high. Marcel's going to kill you :) Nice knowin' ya ;)

    ????GT - 1981/Late - (Sold By) Steve Earle - $320,000
    This is 4293GT

????GT - 1984 - Driven by Don Walker at Monterey 1984 - $275,000 (Needs Restoration)
    This is 3987GT

    Hi Greg,
Great thread. It may read easier if you do it chronologically from 60's onwards (or alternatively from 3223 towards 5575). Thanks for posting it.

    Thanks for your help, Dave.

The reason that it isn't in any specific order, whether by S/N or chronological, is because I hope that people add to this list in the future. For all I know, this may only be a small fraction of the transactions that have taken place. Perhaps I'll re-arrange them in a more palatable order when more posts come. I will also do one for 250TR's and other "bigwig" models.

I would also love to make the changes you pointed out, but there is no "edit" button present, so how would I go about doing it? Heh, oops, I thought I had taken out the "Mr. Walton" thing, sorry Robbie! Also, don't kill me Marcel! I am naive to the full details of the transaction! I'm just a mere price junkie!

I don't know that you can edit, but you could post it as a reply (I didn't want to do that because it's your thread). It may be confusing to read because it's not 'in order'... which may keep some posters from participating- just my opinion.
It is a small fraction of the transactions [if you look at 36 250 GTOs, 1 330 GTO, and 1 400SA (4561) that people insist on calling a 330 GTO... and you figure the cars were made 45+ years ago].
Nonetheless, for those who are interested, Fchat brings together the resources (through people who post here) to be able to get the story straight on various cars through a thread like this. In my mind, a worthwhile undertaking.

    Best,
    Dave

I read in an Autoweek article that someone traded a 250GTO and $10000 cash for a new Daytona Coupe (25k Sticker) in 1973. Anybody know of the car?

Despite having owned, traded, raced and sold many of these GTOs over the years, I will hold back specific comments on the numerous errors on this list. I will state for the record that the comment on Rob Walton is in beyond poor taste. If he were not such a gentleman you might find yourself on the very wrong end of a very expensive case of slander.

    Hi Guys,

I have a memory of walking through Sheffield in 1981 on a summers day, think it was July, with the wife to be.

We had just bought our first house and were in the city to do some shopping.

I parked up, near the garage and car sales showroom I bought all my early cars from, which, was T C Harrisons.(Ford Dealership)

I knew that `round the back,` was a private garage where, the Ferraris were kept. As we walked by ,the roller shutter door was open. All that stood in the way of me and my passion was a plastic curtain.

I slowed down and listened, to see if there were any noises coming from inside....none, so, I slowly moved back the curtain and a Scottish voice said `can I help you?`

I quickly mentioned that I was interested in Ferraris and he invited us both in.

Wow....there must have been at least a dozen Ferraris and a GT40. He pulled off the dust sheets covering several cars, one of which was a 250 GTO, this one had 2no. cooling vents behind each front wheel so, to show off my `knowledge` I mentioned that I had read that some GTOs had 3no. vents. He walked about 3 metres and pulled off another dust sheet, `you mean like this one?` he said, with a grin on his face.

To maintain the link to the thread, one of these cars was apparently sold to a Japanese collector I believe and at the time, I was told that it was the most expensive car in the world.

Is the statement true and how much was it sold for.

Sorry if anybody has been bored by my memories by the way.

    Best Regards

    Jon

As I stated before, I meant to omit that comment, my apologies to Mr. Walton, and yes I should've picked that up before cutting and pasting a personal list I began years ago. The comment was indeed in poor taste. I will re-post this message with this conflict resolved. You, on the other hand, need to be more understanding. I am a 21-year-old college student who happens to have an extraordinarily intense interest in vintage sports cars. I know nothing of Mr. Walton's personal life, and have no knowledge whatsoever in regards to his demeanor. My quip was more reflective of my displeasure in some of the initiatives taken by Wal Mart over the years, which likely have little or nothing to do with Robson himself, and may not even be true for all I know. Now that I apologized and made a complete "a" of myself, I'm going to re-post this. I had no idea such an inconspicuous little quip would blossom into this conflict, which should've never occured in the first place.

Bill, can we please bury the hatchet? I do not want to make enemies. If you still don't want to contribute to this thread, that's more than O.K. I didn't mean to hurt you, or Mr. Walton. I also forget sometimes that many of the members of this club are good friends with or in fact may BE the person in question.

The offense was hardly against me and I hold no grudges ever. I now Rob well and have so for many years. I deal and treat people on an individual basis and he stands out always as one of the nicest people I have ever met.

He is always polite, kind and a pleasure to race against and with. Having run hard alongside him in a GTO vs GTO battle, I hope in the future to be able to do so again.

A public forum such as this is a welcome venue to express ideas freely. It is not however a place to vent and post poor or judgmental comments about a non-participating 3rd party who can not defend him or herself.

A list such as this is very informative and I am sure you will get many inputs and corrections from a variety of the fine members who contribute here.

I would simply suggest leaving any snide remarks about past owners out.

Who knows, we might all be happy working at Wall Mart someday... I can think of worse things that could happen in an ever changing world.

Simply my opinion... I could be wrong... but feel otherwise.

    Cheers,

    Bill

I would like to vote that this be organised by serial number so it traces the owner to owner transactions plus any public offerings along the way.

As a note on the Mark De Friece car, that was the one restored by Griswold in Berkley, CA. Griswold printed a poster that had the all the restored parts laid our prior to the car's reassembly. Wish I had gotten one "back in the day".

    Wow Jon,

You sure picked the right Ford dealers to visit in the UK :) I've often wondered what a visit there would have been like- when these cars were still race cars and not yet investments...
On the GTO scorecard, you saw 3505GT and 3909GT. You probably also saw 0736TR (250 TR of theirs) in addition to whatever else was there.

3909GT was later sold to Japan and at the time was the highest price for a Ferrari sale. The rumors (for us out in the cheap seats, on the sidelines) were the transaction was in the range of USD $13.8 to 17.2 million. I believe Michael Sheehan was in the middle of this transaction and he has written that it was on the low end of this range. Still an awful lot and if adjusted for inflation, I would think the most anyone ever paid for a GTO.

    Best,
    Dave

For the record, I never intended this to be in the post in the first place, I thought I had already corrected it. I guess I should have proofread it first. I wasn't even TRYING to "vent" any feelings. Also keep in mind that I compiled the list, the majority of it anyway, in 2006. Perhaps I was pissed at WalMart for some reason when I was typing this 3 years ago, as a high school senior? This is rather unfortunate because I was NOT trying to make a statement of any kind in this post, and God knows that a vintage sports car-oriented message board would be the last place I would want to express an opinion on such a subject, whether in a crude or professional manner. But Bill, if you don't hold grudges, why on earth did you have to come down so harshly? I seriously thought that I (unintentionally) struck a nerve. This is frustrating as hell.

OK, those are my final words in regards to this crap. Now I just have to wait for the admins to fix the comment, and we can resume the thread as normal.

4757GT - Stollenwerk bought the car from Chris Cord (his brother in law).

3223GT - ownership needs to include Bob Bodin. It may have been Mike Sheehan who was the middle man between Bodin and the next owner (Japan?).

4091GT - need to include Bob Epstien who bought the car from Kerry Payne. Bob bought both 4091 and 5909 (250LM) from Kerry Payne and for a while had both at the same time.

I suggest that you use the Jess Pouret book to get the history up to the late 70s.
