I have purchased #40557 a series one 5 speed from Brett at Gran Turismo. The engine and transmission are in the process of being refurbished/reinstalled as we speak. Brett and I thought you might like to see some photos documenting its mechanical reconstruction. Gran Turismo, the floor is now yours, feel free to post.

Is that the car Brett recently bought from Forza Motorsports? Brett talked of doing a color change.

no, the colour change ( and similar engine out ) is on Jim's 365gt4. the two cars are being done together over the coming months.

well i still have my '78 400a and the '79 400i parts car. do those count ?
there is another 365 gt4 in the works...but the deal is not cast in stone yet.
    all the best Art.

Thanks for the photos. Keep 'em coming. It's always good to see how things come apart and go back together again.

What did you have done to the headers? They look great.

the headers really are beautiful and i'm sure they'll serve David well. they are cerama chromed, which is a prime/bake, paint/bake process rather than a powder coating type of treatment. the little bypass pipe has been capped and David will have custom center sections made up of 4 single pipes with inline 'bullet' type resonators that will mate up to 2 new Ansa silencers at the rear. it will sound fantastic.

Jim's GT4 will have the indentical set-up and it is the same system i've enjoyed on my 400 for the last 4 years.

regarding the tranny, it's all good so far D...really good. a few motor refreshening pics and then the tranny...which is very, very cool.
beautiful in fact, a true work of art and engineering brilliance, in great shape and the 'guts' have obviously been done very recently. oil was new.
exact measurements to be taken today...but having just dismantled a 308 tranny last week with 'done' syncros, i already know it's great news.
it seems that it was refreshed at the same time the heads and block were done and, as were they, awaiting reinstallation.
awaiting the new flywheel, clutch, pressure plate and TO bearing.

    update on syncronizer clearance...
    1st gear = 0.055
    2nd gear = 0.055
    3rd gear = 0.055
    4th gear = 0.065
    5th gear = 0.055

as a reference point, the minimum value is 0.019
this is an 'as new' tranny where syncro clearance is concerned.

the case is headed into the jet washer as we speak and will have the same Wurth silver finish as the components in the previous pics.

I can see this is going to be another great thread.

Would you post just one good, front angle shot of the exterior car in question?

had no idea of the previous threads, just this one started on the rebuild. Perhaps had there been a link in this thread I would have connected the dots...but, thanks for the consideration, it looks to be an interesting project. These 400's are looking to me more and more like one to acquire. I like the more metal look, and the very nice ol' 12 cylinders.

I see the inside of the pan looks painted silver, if so I was wondering how it was prepped to prevent it from flaking off and going through the oiling system? Painting the inside of an engine is always questionable becasue of that risk vs the benefit. As an example I read the boxer engine book by Ray Ichiro f u kuno and this is something he touched on so Ill quote him now....."although the coating on the inside (of the gearbox) was totally removed during washing, I did not venture to redo the treatment". Also, "ferrari engines of those times had malted lime green coloured paint on all inner surfaces presumably to prevent sand dropping from casting mold and improve oil down-flow. However....the paint membrane tended to peel off and get stuck in the oil filter to bring about the opposite effect". One of the paints Ive heard that actually might work, provided the surfaces are prepped properly is Glyptal red but again the benefits dont out-weigh the risk so why take the chance? You cant go wrong with bare aluminum on the inside.
