Spot on Prova85 Just back from the garage following some post Le Mans fixing. BTW - any thoughts on how many single mirror TR's were RHD?
Good idea, it may be the chassis no. instead of the vin no. As far as how many RHD we'll get a better idea as more info comes in. I've been thinking of maybe putting a web site together for the 84 to 86 TR's. Think it would be worth it? Mine is a US 1986 Red/Tan Single Mirror car. Built January 1986. Originally had metrix single nut wheels and TRX tires (still have them stored) but now have 16 inch single nut factory wheels and modern tires. Last five numbers of the VIN are 61951. 37,000 miles Texas.
Ron Do you know if the cars are still in existence for those that are listed without being posted by owners on fchat? Where are you getting that info from ? Also 56221 s/b 21000mi not km's.
I'am getting other numbers from cars for sale and another web site. The other site is for all TR's and not all folks put their name and location, or year they listed. As an example khayes just updated a number from the other site that shows 61951 for sale in 2003 and 20,000m. It now has 37,000m and we know for sure it exists. At the very least we can list numbers as they come up and update them as more people write in. Also Ferrari lists the numbers as VIN numbers so I guess we should too. Not to be pedantic but Ferrari does not refer to the last 6 digits as a VIN but as a "Chassis serial number" Now for an obvious question. Why are cars that whose numbers are well into the 66's listed as 85's and cars earlier in the 64's listed as 86's ? Image Unavailable, Please Login
what was the s/n of the first factory low and dual mirrors car? i own 69843 and it is an 87 low mirrors car
Well folks, all I can say about numbers mixed up with different years is this is the way it is relayed to me . Most likely some are reporting the registration year and others the build year on the drivers side door plate. This plate also lists the VIN # which includes the chassis as the last 5 digits. Having the complete VIN# would give us the model year for sure. A lot of cars cars are out there with lost original paperwork or when the car was re-registered perhaps a sales date was put down as the model year. At any rate this kind of thing would be expected in this type of project. As there doesn't seem to be a problem with people getting the numbers in as VIN# we can change it when it becomes a problem, ok? The first double mirror car is reported as 67487 US and 67079 EURO. FWIW Red-Headed lists the 85's up to somewhere in the 59's and the 86's starting somewhere in the 59's. Anything above the 59's should be listed as an 86 IMO.
Red\blk single bolt, with double low mirrors.Vin # 67614 prodution date on side door says October '86, however is register as an '87. Anyone else close to this # ? I always get a little ticked when I hear about the high prodution TR #'s.
Well, so far we're almost to 50 cars. Now I'am sure not all flying mirror owners read FerrariChat and maybe some that do don't send in their numbers but, in 1984 they built 110 cars, and most of them were probably in Europe. In 1985 they built 568 but, they didn't import to the US untill the second half of the year so, as redeheaded reports about 150-200 gray market cars were brought to the US. In 1986 there were 819 cars produced and most likely most were delivered to the US. So of that total, (about 1497 total) how many can there be left in the world and how many in the US? As I've said before the flying mirror cars are special and I'll be surprised if half of the production is left. Good work so far! One local here who has done a lot of similar work suggested a couple of things so obvious that I could not think of them... a) - Ferrari owners club must have something like this in their records b) - He says he took out an ad years back looking for a 512M and still gets replies to this day One idea I had, and I don't know if such records are available in many states, but is there a public information registration for cars by make in some states?

Just to be clear: - Only US cars have a model year as part of the VIN. European cars do not have a model year. - The build year on the driver's side door plate is also a US-only thing. It is not present on Euro cars. Yes, there is frequently confusion between build date, delivery date, first registration date and model year! By and large cars of a particular model (such as the Testarossa) are/were built roughly in chassis number sequence. There are some small variations, which I suspect may be due to things like quality control etc. altering the completion sequence. US Testarossas: 85 model year - Chassis number range = 55773 to 59501. 119 cars 86 model year - Chassis number range = 59861 to 67019. 299 cars I do have a note somewhere of serial numbers of the last 'flying mirror' cars, but not immediately to hand. I help out with the UK Owners' Club Register of Ferraris. It contains various details including type, chassis number, colour etc. It doesn't currently explicitly identify which are 'flying mirror' cars and which aren't although whether they were originally or not is derivable from the chassis number. Having had contact with a number of the other Owners' Clubs around the world, I believe they generally keep similar sorts of records to the UK Club. Jonathan
US Testarossas: 85 model year - Chassis number range = 55773 to 59501. 119 cars 86 model year - Chassis number range = 59861 to 67019. 299 cars What? That adds up to 418 total. I'm going to keep mine forever - I'm really getting interested in trying to reach a consenus on how many are left. Good project. Thank you for it. Just to be clear, it is so that the chassis numbers are shared by all models, ie, there are all types of Fcars included in the number sequence, and therefore little can be discerned from the numbers themselves, other than start and end dates?
If those are the original US import numbers, who would care to take a guess on how many are left? It would seem that this thread is working it's way toward a pretty good percentage of those cars in this range that are still around. This could very well be the seed that starts the eventual appreciation of these cars - I myself would have guessed 3 or 4 times the numbers quoted above. Indeed, they are worth far more than we thought.
This registry seems to be getting somewhat muddy and raising more questions. I say that as my car 56221 was imported back in May 85 when the buyer didn't want to wait until later in the year when Ferrari was able to properly produce a US emissions spec car hence no US spec cars hit dealers until approx Sept 85. I question whether 55773 is a US Tr ?
Yes. To clarify Ferrari allocated odd numbers only up to 75000 to road cars. Thereafter, all numbers were used. These numbers are allocated more-or-less in sequence to cars beginning the production process and the number sequence is used for all models. Thus (and I am making these numbers up), 76001 might be a Testarossa and 76002 might be a 328. Generally numbers are allocated in small batches of half-a-dozen or so to cars of the same type. I hope that makes sense! Yes, 55773 is a US Testarossa and with Ferrari things like this are always muddy! The full VIN is ZFFSA17A3F0055773 (note the 'A' eighth character which indicates a US version car, as opposed to 'B' for Euro cars, 'C' for UK cars etc.). It is/was red with black interior. I also have details of some Euro (and Swiss) variant cars that are, or have been, in the US. I don't know when 55773 was actually imported to the US offhand. Certainly Euro cars (always the first to be produced) quite often find their way to other markets early on when the impatient can't wait. It is also entirely possible that the first US spec cars were tested in Italy by the factory for a period before going on to be sold in the US. It may also be possible that the serial numbers are allocated at customer 'spec' time and delays on US version builds mean't that 55773 was actually built some time after 56221. Jonathan Edit: Incidentally, I note that Edvar gives 67487 as the first US low-mirror car on red-headed.com
